With most car insurance policies, it is possible to purchase passenger indemnity insurance. What is and is not compensated with passenger insurance and what does this have to do with?
Recent research by research firm Moneyview shows that after an accident you sometimes get nothing or only partial compensation if you are a passenger in a car not wearing a seatbelt.
As an occupant of a car, you are required to wear a seat belt. If you do not, you will receive a lower payment from the passenger insurance company.

What does passenger accident insurance cover?

Passenger indemnity insurance compensates the damage suffered by the driver and passengers of the motor vehicle involved in an accident. Such damages may include property damage (clothing, luggage, etc.), loss of income, domestic help, transportation costs, medical costs, compensation and funeral expenses.

With this insurance, it does not matter who is at fault for the accident.
You can settle the claim with your own insurer. You are not dependent on another party's liability insurer in this case.

When does passenger accident insurance not provide coverage?

Occupant insurance does not provide coverage for damage to the vehicle itself. Also, when a private car was used as a cab or if it participated in a race or other speed drive, this insurance does not provide coverage. When the driver does not have a valid driver's license or was under the influence of (too much) alcohol or drugs. In addition, wearing a seat belt is a reason not to provide coverage or to reduce the passenger insurance benefit.

The recent survey shows that it varies by insurer whether you get no payout or a lower payout for not wearing your seat belt.
59% of auto insurers reduce the passenger insurance payout by 25%.

Rules regarding wearing a seat belt

To make it clear to everyone how and why the seat belt should be worn, a set of rules have been established here.
It is important that everyone use their own seat belt. Two or more people in one seat belt is prohibited, including children. In addition, each passenger must have their own seat. The number of seat belts determines the number of people that may be transported. This means that no more persons may be transported than the number of seat belts present. As a final rule, the seat belt may not be used in any way other than what it is made for.

Exceptions to the duty to carry

There are some exceptions to mandatory seat belt wearing. If you cannot wear a seat belt because of a physical disability. It is then important that you apply for an exemption from the Centraal Bureau Rijvaardigheidsbewijzen (CBR).
It may also be the case that there are no seat belts present in the car. Cars built before 1971 do not have seat belts. Therefore, it is not mandatory to wear a seat belt in these cars.
