Safe on the road with children
December is the time of coziness and being together with your family and friends. You spoil your children extra with presents and take them to parties. But are you transporting your child safely in the car? In 9 out of 10 cases, car seats are not properly adjusted.
You would prefer to transport your child in the safest and most pleasant way possible, for both the child and yourself. The car is an ideal means of transportation for families. Yet an accident is in a small corner. Then it is important that you are well insured. What should you pay attention to?
Car Insurance
The driver of a car is always excluded from car insurance coverage. Occupant compensation insurance (SVI) pays for damages suffered by the occupants, including the driver.
Damage insurance for passengers
A major advantage of passenger indemnity insurance is that when the question of fault is not clear or the liable party is not known, this insurance still pays out to the occupants. Often the policy also covers compensation for damages.
Below is an overview of possible (injury) damages that are covered by passenger indemnity insurance
- Material damage
When it comes to broken things, this is called property damage. Handling this type of damage usually takes little effort. - Personal injury
If there are deaths or injuries, then there is personal injury.
These may be sensitive situations. Damage treatment and compensation may also take longer.
How big a victim's damages are can usually not be properly assessed until the victim is (almost) healed.
The process of settling personal injury claims is often more complex and sensitive than for property damage. That is why rules have been drawn up for this: Code of Conduct for Handling Personal Injury.
Insurers adhere to this code of conduct when handling personal injury claims. - In and around the car
Insurance coverage applies when the occupants are in the car, as well as while getting in and out of the car, or, for example, while performing emergency repairs on the road. The policy conditions state exactly what is covered. - Consequential damages
- Damage to clothing and luggage; - Medical expenses; - Loss of income due to the injury; - Any temporary household help
This insurance covers personal injury up to a maximum insured amount and can be added when you purchase auto insurance.
Car seats
When buying a car seat, pay close attention to which car seat is suitable for your child.
Car seats with i-Size approval are graded by body height. The manufacturer may determine the minimum and maximum height for which the car seat is suitable. The length range is indicated on the seat. In these car seats, children up to 15 months must always be transported facing the direction of travel.
With older approval standards, car seats are divided into four groups with minimum and maximum weights.
The groups are listed below:
- 0+ from 0 to 13 kg
- I from 9 to 18 kg
- II from 15 to 25 kg
- III from 22 to 36 kg
