Are you insured for fireworks damage?

During the turn of the year, a lot of damage is caused by fireworks to homes and cars. Fireworks can be very beautiful, but fireworks remain explosive and so accidents can happen. So what about insurance?

In the unlikely event that you suffer damage to your property, it is wise to find out what your insurer will reimburse. We list it for you below.

Fireworks damage to your car

If you have car insurance with WA+ coverage (limited casco) or all-risk insurance, storm and fire damage is covered by the policy. Fireworks damage is covered under your car's fire coverage. Car damage caused by fireworks is not covered when you only have third-party insurance. If you know who caused the damage, it is important to report it to the insurer. This way, the insurer can recover the damage from the person in question.

If you claim damage with your insurer, you may lose your claim-free years and premium discount. Consider carefully in advance whether it might not be more advantageous to pay for the damage yourself rather than claim it from your insurer.

Fireworks damage to your home

Fire damage caused to your home by fireworks is covered by your homeowners insurance in most cases. However, it is important that you read the policy conditions of your insurer. This is because there are a number of types of fireworks damage that often come with a more comprehensive building insurance policy. These include fireworks damage caused by melting, scorching or explosion. Also, damage to glass, such as the windows of your home, is not routinely covered under your homeowners insurance policy.

Fireworks damage to your property

If your property has been damaged by fireworks, this is covered by contents insurance. This insurance also pays out if you suffered damage to your clothing, for example. An exception is damage caused by vibrations. This damage can be caused by setting off heavy (illegal) fireworks. This can cause items in the house to fall over or, for example, paintings to fall off the wall. With the most comprehensive coverage, you are insured against damage caused by vibrations.

Precautions

Prevention is always better than cure. To prevent fireworks damage, you can take some precautions. This will reduce the chances of damage from fireworks:

  1. Put your car(s) inside or in a guarded/locked area
  2. Lock your mailbox
  3. Put trash containers inside or lock them
  4. Put on safety glasses and wear clothing made of cotton or wool

Many fireworks damages are therefore covered by default by your insurer. Always read, just to be sure, the policy terms and conditions so you will not have any unpleasant surprises.
