How can I obtain claim-free years?

When you want to requestclaim-free years, you can only do this with your own insurance company or with Roy-Data. On the policy of the car insurance of most insurance companies it is NOT stated how many claim-free years you have accumulated. What is often stated is the bonus-malus step or the discount percentage but not the number of claim-free years. This is inconvenient. Because when you want to compare premiums with another company you need your claim-free years. With the bonus-malus step or discount percentage you can roughly calculate how many claim-free years you have, but this is not 100% reliable.

By driving claim-free, you build up claim-free years. If you have built up claim-free years, you get a discount on the premium of your car insurance. The car insurance must be in your name. Do you claim no damage during the insurance year? That entitles you to one claim-free year. By claiming a damage you will lose claim-free years. How do you know how many claim-free years you have accumulated?

Where can I get my claim-free years?

You can request claim-free years in a digital system called Roy-Data. Roy-Data contains cancellation data, such as the number of claim-free years. Only insurance companies have access to this database. Even an intermediary cannot view the claim-free years online or request them by phone. In contrast, anyone can request the claim-free years listed in Roy-Data. If you want to know how many claim-free years you have in Roy-Data, you can submit a request.

Claim-free years

Note! Damage-free years are only put into Roy-Data after your insurance has ended. This is the case when you switch to another insurance company. Do you want to know your claim-free years while your insurance is still running? Then you need to contact your current insurer.

As of 1 January 2014, policyholders will receive an annual statement of the number of claim-free years accrued. Consumers will receive this statement with the annual invoice, on the policy schedule or with the proof of premium payment.

Claim-free years for your moped or scooter are not visible in Roy-Data. If you want to know how many claim-free years you have accumulated for your moped or scooter, you have to contact the cancelling insurer.

We always recommend calling the company first and asking how many years you have and only then make a premium comparison. Once an insurance policy has been cancelled, the old insurance company puts in Roy-data how many claim-free years you have accumulated. Roy-data is a database to which insurance companies have access. Unfortunately, intermediaries do not have access to this database. However, it is possible to submit an online request to Roy-data and they will send you the data from this database by mail.

What are my claim-free years?

Claim-free years are normally linked to a car insurance policy. Should the claim-free years no longer be linked to a car insurance policy, their validity is limited. Non-linked claim-free years are valid for three years with most insurers. However, this varies per insurer.
Having or not having claim-free years makes a big difference for car insurance. By driving damage-free, you can build up a discount between 70 and 80% with most insurers. To ensure that your claim-free years do not expire, you can transfer (part of) your claim-free years. This can also be useful in case of a divorce or when breaking a cohabitation contract in which you have built up claim-free years together. With a waiver it is possible to transfer (part of) your claim-free years as an owner.

By transferring claim-free years, you can prevent the partner who does not have the car insurance in his/her name from having to start again with zero claim-free years. With a waiver, the owner of the claim-free years can transfer them (in part) to an ex-partner. The policyholder can transfer claim-free years to someone who is registered on the policy as one of the regular drivers. People who are registered as regular drivers have actually contributed to the accumulation of claim-free years. You can give your children claim-free years only if they are registered on the policy as a regular driver. If this is not the case, it is not possible to give claim-free years to your children.

How do I request the number of claim-free years?

Not sure how many claim-free years you have? Then you can request this in several ways, such as from your intermediary, insurer or from Roy-Data. Damage-free years are only entered into Roy-Data after your insurance has ended. If you still have a car insurance, your current accumulated claim-free years are not yet registered. You should always request these from your car insurer. Through the website of Stichting EPS you can request your data from Roy Data. This way you will know exactly how many claim-free years you have accumulated.

Claim-free years transferable since 1-1-2022

Since Jan. 1, 2022, claim-free years are transferable in some situations. Upon death, for example, they can be transferred to the surviving partner. Also for lease drivers and drivers who have lived abroad for years, it is now possible to transfer claim-free years. This way they do not lose their accumulated claim-free years.
