If I take out a car insurance policy, am I immediately insured?

If you have just become the proud owner of a new car, you will naturally want to get on the road with it as soon as possible. Before you can drive your car on the public roads, you need to have a car insurance. In the Netherlands, it is a legal obligation to take out at least a third-party insurance before you drive your car. You can take out a car insurance within a few minutes, but are you also insured immediately? In this article we will explain it to you.

Equally insured

Immediately insured with provisional cover

When you take out car insurance, an insurer still has to assess the application. You would probably like to be insured immediately. That is why provisional cover has been introduced. Car insurance with provisional cover means that you are fully insured. In principle, the car insurance has already started, but the final acceptance and the policy are still to follow. In the unlikely event of damage during provisional cover, your car is still insured. Once you have applied for car insurance, the application is sent directly to the insurer. You will then receive an e-mail stating whether you have provisional cover or not.

No provisional cover, now what?

Do you receive an e-mail stating that you will not receive provisional cover? Then you are not yet insured and cannot use the car right away. In that case, the insurer must first assess and approve your application. On average, this is completed within 1 hour and, in many cases, within 10 minutes. This can take up to 48 hours. In most cases you can still get on the road with your car. It may happen that your application for car insurance, after receiving provisional coverage, is still rejected. In that case we will contact you to discuss the possibilities.

Not insured immediately? Then don't go on the road!

It is, of course, annoying if you do not immediately receive provisional cover, but it is unwise to take your car on the road anyway. Driving around in an uninsured car is a punishable offence. If you drive an uninsured car, you risk a €550 fine. On top of that, there may be a €400 fine from the RDW. If you cause damage with an uninsured car, you also have to pay all the costs yourself. And if the car has been uninsured for too long, you will be registered with the CIS Foundation and many regular insurance companies will no longer accept you.
