Home Car Insurance Can't insure car

Help, I cannot insure my car. What should I do?

Every car owner is required to have at least third-party car insurance. This car insurance ensures that you are insured for damage you cause to another person. It is possible that your application for car insurance is refused by the insurer. This is because insurers do not have a duty of acceptance. If they feel you pose too great a risk, they may also refuse you as a policyholder. An insurer may refuse you for several reasons. On Alpina.nl we explain why your car insurance has been refused and how you can still insure your car.

Why can't I insure my car?

If you are declined for auto insurance there can be several reasons. Insurers do risk analysis. They look at various factors in your past to determine how likely you are to claim compensation or be unable to pay the insurance premium. The greater that chance, the higher the premium. Once the risk is very high, such as because another insurer has terminated your insurance for non-payment, an insurer will reject your application. There are a number of reasons why an insurer will deny you auto insurance.

What happens if a default occurs

It can happen to anyone: you move house and lose a car insurance invoice, which means you are late with your payment. Or your bank account is just short of funds when the premium is debited. If you are late in paying your car insurance once, you are not immediately known as a defaulter. This will only happen if you are late several times or do not pay at all. If you are registered as a defaulter, chances are you will not be able to get car insurance from a regular insurance company.

I have driving disqualification what now?

Have you ever had a driving disqualification? With a driving disqualification you are not allowed to drive a motor vehicle for a certain period of time. You can get a driving disqualification in different situations, for example when you drive under the influence of drugs or alcohol, when you continue driving after an accident, when you drive more than 50 km per hour too fast or when you get into the car with a driving disqualification or invalid driving license. Even when your driving disqualification has been lifted, your car insurance may be refused as an insurer may consider you too great a risk.

Too many claims claimed what now?

Insurers can see from the national database Roy-Data how often you have submitted a claim in the past. They especially look at claims where legal assistance is important, such as theft or window damage. If you have often submitted a claim, they assume that you will do so again in the future. This is a reason for the insurer to refuse your application for car insurance.

I have a criminal record what now?

With a criminal record, there is a good chance that you will be refused car insurance, even if your criminal record has nothing to do with your car or your driving record. This is because insurers see someone with a criminal record as a higher moral hazard. They assume that people with a criminal record are less likely to follow insurance rules. This is a reason for them not to accept you as a policyholder.

Young driver with a fast car is that a risk?

It sometimes happens that a young driver wants to insure a fast car. However, many insurers do not cooperate in this. Young drivers are seen as a risk group. Statistics show that young drivers up to 24 years old, on average, have more damage than older drivers. Young drivers also have less driving experience. Therefore, insurers often consider a young driver with a sporty, fast car to be too big a risk.

I was caught with insurance fraud what now?

Insurance companies take insurance fraud seriously. If you are caught committing insurance fraud, this will be registered with the CIS Foundation. They store this information in their national database. All affiliated insurers can view the information in this database.

When people hear the word fraud, they often think of serious crimes, but it can also be about withholding information during the insurance application. If you withhold information from the insurer and the insurer finds out, your insurance will be immediately terminated or refused.

The car has been uninsured in your name for too long can this happen?

As soon as a car is registered in your name, you are legally obliged to insure it for at least Civil Liability. The car must be insured even if you do not drive it. If your car has been registered uninsured for more than 14 days, you may be refused car insurance as soon as you apply for it. Many insurance companies do not want to insure a car that should have been insured a long time ago.

Frequently Asked Questions

What exactly is a CIS registration?

A CIS registration is a registration in the database of Stichting CIS. CIS stands for Central Information System. Stichting CIS keeps track of all important insurance data, such as the number of damage claims or when someone committed fraud. This database is accessible to all affiliated insurers and agents.

What are the acceptance requirements of De Vereende?

De Vereende sets some conditions for taking out an insurance policy

  • You pay the premium at least 3 months in advance, also with monthly payment
  • The insurance only comes into effect after receipt of the first premium AND a signed application form
  • In most cases De Vereende also charges a deposit of an average of € 175. This must be paid in advance. If no damage has occurred at the end of the insurance policy, this amount will be refunded to you.
When will I be able to get car insurance from a regular insurance company again?

As long as you are registered with the CIS Foundation, there is a good chance that a regular insurance company will not accept you. A CIS registration for non-payment usually remains in place for 3 to 5 years. This depends on the nature and seriousness of the situation. After this time, the CIS registration will automatically be deleted from the system. As soon as your CIS registration has been removed, you can take out insurance again with a regular insurance company.
