Applying for a new licence plate

Are you looking for a new registration number? When you lose your license plate, you must apply to the RDW for a replacement license plate. Only the owner of the car can apply for this. You can request a replacement registration certificate via the RDW website. Read all about the new registration certificate.

It is not necessary that you notify the auto insurance company.

What is a license plate card?

If the owner/holder no longer has the registration certificate, a new registration card must be requested from the RDW. The RDW sends this to the owner/applicant together with a new registration code. The registration card then has the same registration number but a different one. The costs for this are € 31.50.

Registration code

If the owner/holder still has the registration card but no longer has the registration code, he can apply for a new registration code via the RDW website.

The RDW then sends the code to the address of the registered owner/holder.
The cost for this is (expected to be) € 20.00.

Applying for a registration card urgently

If the owner/holder no longer has the registration certificate and/or registration code but needs a replacement certificate, a new registration code or both on the same day, he/she can choose for an urgent application. The costs for an urgent delivery of a registration card with registration code are €200.00. No money will be refunded if the old registration card and/or code is found later.

Lost your license plate?

When you lose a vehicle's registration certificate, you can apply for new registration papers at the RDW.

Applying for license papers online

It is possible to apply for the new registration papers online. This is not possible in the following situations:

- If you cannot use iDEAL.
- In case of missing registration certificate fast motorboats.
- If the owner/holder is deceased.
- If the company is terminated or bankrupt.
- If the owner/holder has emigrated.
- In case of missing registration certificate.
- In case of purchase of a vehicle from Domains.

Application for registration papers in writing

If you do not have the ability to apply for the registration papers online, you can also apply for them in writing. This is the roadmap:

1. You pick up the application form at an RDW office or request it by phone.

- You can request it by telephone from the RDW Customer Service, telephone number: 0900 07 39 (€ 0.10 p.m.).
- You can pick it up at the RDW customer desk in Veendam, Zoetermeer or Den Bosch.
- You can pick it up at an RDW testing station.
- You can download a form to request a form from the RDW here.

2. You read the explanation, fill out the form completely, check "Replace license plate" under "Reason," and sign it.

3. You pay the amount due via online banking or through your bank.

A new registration certificate costs € 31.00.

4. You send the form to the RDW.

Missing or stolen license plates?

If one or two license plates are missing, you no longer need to apply for a replacement license plate. You can purchase new license plates from a license plate manufacturer recognized by the RDW. When doing so, you (or someone on your behalf) must show the original Vehicle Registration Certificate (Part 1A) and a valid identification document. If there are two license plates on the vehicle, two new license plates will also be issued, even if only one license plate is missing. The license plate manufacturer presses the license plates with a raised duplicate code. The license plate manufacturer also records issuing new license plates because the old ones have gone missing.
If your license plate is lost or stolen, the RDW always advises you to report it to the police.

Missing license plates and registration certificate what now?

If you are missing both your license plates and the registration certificate, file a missing report with the police. With the report, you can purchase temporary license plates.
