Blue number plate

Blue number plateToday there are two types blue number plates: for vintage cars and for taxis.

When is a vintage car allowed to carry the blue licence plate?

Old-timers with a date of admission before 1 January 1978 may use the (dark)blue licence plate with white letters. Before the blue licence plate is issued, it is checked whether the date of admission before 1 January 1978 is mentioned on the vehicle certificate and whether the licence plate consists of a combination of 4 numbers and 2 letters. If all requirements are met, an unlimited number of plates may be purchased.
Blue number plates feature a hallmark consisting of the Dutch lion and the text 'RKM'. The hallmark - and in particular the serial number - must remain clearly recognisable, as the maker of the number plate can be traced by means of this serial number.

For imported vintage cars, you can apply for an 'old-fashioned' registration plate from the RDW, provided that the date of first admission is before 1978 for cars and before 1973 for motorcycles/commercial vehicles.

This regulation is an addition to the already existing possibility of refitting historical vehicles, which have a recent registration plate due to loss of registration papers.

Vehicles imported into the Netherlands by enthusiasts because of their historical value are issued a 'classic' license plate by the RDW upon registration. In consultation with the Federation of Historical Automobile Clubs (FEHAC), the RDW has provided some special series of 'old-fashioned' license plates, especially for imported classics.

Passenger cars from before 1978, when imported, automatically receive an 'old fashioned' number plate. Commercial vehicles are given a number plate of series BE-00-00 at the time of registration and motorbikes a number plate of series ZF-00-00.

Vehicles imported before that time may now still qualify for these series of "old-fashioned license plates," provided the date of first admission for automobiles is before 1978 and for motorcycles/commercial vehicles is before 1973. NB The RDW uses the date of first admission. If this cannot be proven, but the year of manufacture can, the RDW assumes the year of manufacture.
