How do I register a caravan?

If you have bought a caravan of more than 750 kg, you, as the new owner, have to register your caravan's registration number. Not every caravan needs to be registered. Only caravans with 750 kg or more have to be registered. So have you bought a new or second-hand caravan with this weight and has the owner changed? Then registration is necessary. Once this has been done, there can be no question of a new owner.

As far as insurance is concerned, only the base vehicle needs to be insured, as the caravan is automatically included in your third-party car insurance. However, it is still wise to take out caravan insurance.

Can I transfer a caravan online?

You can arrange the registration in various places, such as the municipality, PostNL locations and car garages recognised by the RDW. You can also arrange the registration online yourself. On the website of the RDW, you can easily arrange the transfer yourself online. You do need to have your DigiD login details and an Android smartphone for the app 'RDA scanner'. The online transfer follows automatically.

On the RDW site, choose 'transfer vehicle' and log in with your DigiD details. Then you have to scan the QR code with your phone, after which an additional verification scan is made of your identity document. Then you enter the online transfer service of the RDW. If the amount due is paid, the transfer is successful and you will receive a link to the certificate of indemnification and the registration report by e-mail. You will receive the registration card and the second part of the registration code by post a few working days later.

What do I need to register my caravan?

For the registration of your caravan you can go to various companies and locations on weekdays. Nowadays you can also go to several locations during weekends. Please check in advance the opening hours on Saturdays and Sundays.

What do you need to bring along for the registration of your caravan? First of all you need to bring a valid identification document. To transfer a vehicle, you must be 18 years of age or older. It is also important to bring the registration card and the registration code. The registration code consists of two parts and can be found on the registration report and the letter that you received from the RDW together with the vehicle registration card. This code replaces the old transfer papers and you should keep it in a safe place. You will need it again when you sell or trade in the caravan, for example. Did you buy the caravan second hand from a private person? Then it is advisable to arrange the registration together with the seller. He or she must receive the certificate of release from liability, as this is proof of the change of ownership.
