When can I start driving my mobility scooter?

Before you start driving your mobility scooter, you need to think about a number of things. The first step is to take out a mobility scooter insurance. Although it has no number plate, you are obliged to have at least a WA insurance. Once you have taken out the insurance, you will receive an insurance sticker (formerly known as an insurance plate). After taking out the insurance policy, the insurer will send you a number plate. You have to attach this to your mobility scooter, before you can start driving it.

When am I allowed to drive a mobility scooter?

The driving of a mobility scooter is not age-bound. Both young and old may drive a scooter. If the mobility scooter goes faster than 10 kilometres per hour, you have to be at least 16 years old. Does the vehicle go slower? Then there is no minimum age. No driving licence is required to drive the vehicle.

There are also a number of rules regarding the dimensions of the mobility scooter or disabled person's vehicle. The following dimensions are compulsory:

  • Length may not exceed 3.50 metres
  • Width maximum 1.10 metres
  • Height maximum 2.00 metres

If you drive a mobility scooter, the same rules apply to you as apply to all other road users. You may use your mobility scooter on the pavement, footpath, cycle path or roadway. Motorways and motorways are prohibited for the mobility scooter. From 1 July 2019, the use of your telephone, iPad or navigation system will be prohibited while driving your mobility scooter. The same rules apply as when you use your mobile phone or listen to music on your bicycle. You risk a €95 fine if the police catch you.
