How do you save money by suspending your motorhome?

A motor home is both a means of transport and accommodation. When you go on holiday with your campervan, you actually have your holiday home with you. This gives a great sense of freedom, even when you have arrived at your holiday destination. However, you are probably one of those many motor home owners who only use their motor home for a small part of the year. Summer is, of course, the time when it is most often used, and sometimes it is taken out of the vehicle in spring and autumn. What a shame it is if you don't use your camper for the rest of the year, but pay road tax all year round. So be smart and start now with the annual suspension of your motor home.

What does camper van suspension mean?

If you choose to suspend your camper van, the validity of the registration number will be suspended. This means concretely that you are no longer allowed on the public roads with your campervan. The advantage for you is that your camper does not have to be insured against third-party liability, you do not have to pay road tax and it does not have to be inspected during the period of suspension. You can probably imagine that you can save a lot of money this way. However, it is important that you carefully follow and comply with the applicable rules.

Suspension period

If you decide to suspend your motor home, there are a number of rules you need to bear in mind. In principle, you suspend your camper for a whole year. The suspension will then take effect on the day that you indicate that you want to suspend your camper. If you indeed want to save on the above mentioned expenses, make sure that the suspension of your camper will last at least one month. If you lift the suspension within one month, you will still have to pay road tax over that period. The Tax Authorities will send you an additional levy, and therefore the suspension will have served little purpose.

Extend motorhome suspension period

Of course, it can happen that you don't use your motor home for a whole year. Perhaps you have no holiday plans, perhaps there are other reasons for leaving your camper in the garage. In that case, remember that you have to renew the one-year suspension of your motor home before it expires. By the way, since 2019 you can also choose to arrange your motorhome suspension immediately for two or three years. But bear in mind that this means you will not be allowed on the public roads during this entire period.

Public road = broad concept

The concept of public roads is broader than many people think. The public road includes paths and verges, the sides of roads and car parks if they are publicly accessible.

Suspension costs

If your camper is younger than 15 years, you pay € 73,10. For all other camper vans the costs are € 24.10. Do you want to extend the suspension of your camper? Then this will also cost € 24,10. These are the rates for 2020. If you decide to lift the suspension of your camper, you will not pay any extra costs. Attention: did you already receive a payment slip at the moment you suspend your camper? Then simply pay it. Overpaid road tax will be neatly reimbursed by the Tax and Customs Administration.

Suspend third-party motorhome insurance

We already mentioned that your motor home does not have to be insured against third-party liability during the suspension period. That sounds like an attractive advantage. However, it is wise to find out in advance how this is regulated by your motor home insurance. Many insurances already take the recreational, and therefore temporary, use of motor homes into account when determining their premiums. Are you going to take out new insurance for your motor home? Then compare the different insurers on this aspect as well.

Quickly suspend your motorhome

Suspending your RV can be done quickly and in two ways. You can choose to go to a post office. This is only possible at a number of larger post offices and at the counters of the three RDW offices in Zoetermeer, Den Bosch and Veendam. To do this, you need to bring the registration certificate (which is part 1B) plus the transfer certificate (also known as part II) of your registration certificate. Make sure you also have a valid ID with you.
Of course, you can make it easier on yourself and suspend your motorhome online. This can be done on the RDW website. The suspension takes effect immediately; you will receive confirmation by letter within a few days.

Other motor home insurance

Above we talked about third-party liability insurance, which covers you for any potential legal liability. But of course you have insured your motor home for other things as well. It probably goes without saying that you should keep these insurances running. After all, your motor home runs the risk of being stolen or damaged even (or especially) when you are not using it. You should not think about stopping the insurance, and in that very period something unpleasant happens that gives you a big financial dampening?

More information on road tax

We can imagine that you are wondering about the suspension and the payment of road tax. For more specific information, we refer you to the website of the tax authorities.

Suspend motor home

You can also easily lift the suspension of your campervan online. You will need your DigiD for this. You can terminate the suspension on the RDW website. Please note: you cannot indicate the date for lifting the suspension in advance. At the moment that you want to terminate the suspension, you must report this online. The suspension will then take effect immediately.

Suspension and sale

Suppose you sell your motor home while it is in storage and you have suspended it. You do not have to lift the suspension. As soon as the camper is registered in the name of the new owner, the suspension will be lifted immediately.
