Where can I register a scooter?

When you have purchased a scooter, as the new owner, you must have the license plate transferred to your name. This is also called transferring. You will receive a certificate of indemnification. Once you are in possession of a indemnification certificate, you are no longer liable for the obligations you have as a registration holder.

You can have the license plate transferred at a license plate counter, a PostNL location, an RDW inspection station or an RDW counter. It is also possible to transfer the scooter online. How the online transfer of a scooter works and what the conditions are, you can read here.

Step-by-step plan for registering a scooter

The registration of a scooter goes as follows:

  1. Get the necessary documents from the seller.
  2. Bring these documents including a valid ID to a license plate counter, a PostNL location, an RDW inspection station or an RDW counter.
  3. You pay the cost (2024: €12.50).
  4. The clerk will put the vehicle in your name and you will receive a registration report.
  5. In addition, you will receive the release certificate. You give the indemnification certificate to the seller so he can prove that he is no longer responsible for the vehicle.
  6. From this moment on, the buyer is liable for the obligations that come with having a scooter in his name.
  7. The buyer is now also obliged to take out at least a third-party insurance for the scooter.
  8. The seller can cancel or temporarily stop the scooter insurance and reactivate it when you have bought another scooter.
