The van insurance policy

With van insurance, you can insure your van. The insurance protects you against damage, theft or accidents. It is mandatory to insure your van at least WA (third-party liability), so that you can compensate damage to others.

Damage when used outside working hours

Van insurance also applies outside working hours. If an employee uses the van privately at night without your knowledge as an employer, it does not matter who is responsible for the insurance in the event of a claim. The insurer will settle the claim in the same way.

All about van insurance coverages

The basics insured with WA

Most people choose third-party van insurance if their van is older. This is the basic coverage you should choose at a minimum. This insurance is cheap and convenient if your van is worth little. If you cause damage in an accident, only the other party's damage will be reimbursed, not the damage to your own car.

Third-party insurance is often chosen for older vans. How much the car is worth depends on mileage and maintenance. If a van is worth as little as €1,000, all-risk insurance makes little sense.

The premium is then too high for what you get in return. You don't pay €400 a year for all-risk insurance if the vehicle is only worth €1,000.

More comprehensive coverage with WA + Limited Collision

This insurance, also called WA+, covers more than third-party insurance, but less than all-risk insurance. In addition to damages for which you are legally liable, some other damages are also insured according to the policy conditions.

This includes the following coverages:

  • theft and damage by attempted theft
  • lightning damage
  • animal collision
  • hail damage
  • storm damage
  • window breakage
  • fire and explosion

If you have an older van that is still worth quite a bit, the WA + limited hull insurance is a good option. This insurance covers damage from hail and theft, for example, but the premium is lower than with all-risk insurance.

Choose WA + Limited Collision for vans older than 4 years. This is a guideline; if the daily value is high, all-risk insurance can sometimes be cheaper. For cars 8 to 10 years old, people usually choose only WA coverage.

Fully insured with all-risk

Want the best van insurance? Then choose all-risk. If you damage yourself, your insurer will pay the cost. For a new van, all-risk is a good choice.

Even if your car is 10 years old, all-risk insurance can sometimes be the best choice. Comparing is useful, because sometimes all-risk is even cheaper than WA + limited casco with another insurer.

This insurance provides the coverage in the WA + limited casco plus additional coverages, such as:

  • damage to own car due to collision
  • damage to the van due to a slippery road surface
  • the vehicle becoming submerged in water
  • damage caused by vandalism

Additional coverages for your van

In addition to choosing the right coverage for your van insurance, you can also compare and purchase various additional coverages.

Occupant accidents
v.a. 1 ,12 p/month

As a driver, you are responsible for the other passengers. Even if you pay as much attention as possible, it can still happen that you cause an accident. With passenger accident insurance, you cannot alleviate the personal suffering of the passengers or their relatives. With financial compensation, however, you can ensure that the financial suffering is reduced.

A one-time payment of €15,000 is made in case of permanent disability and €5,000 per passenger or driver in case of death. The advantage is that the question of who is at fault is irrelevant so the payout can be settled quickly.

Indemnity insurance
v.a. 4 ,54 p/month

Passenger indemnity insurance pays out in the event of damage to the occupants of your van. The damage must be caused by an accident. The indemnity passenger insurance provides comprehensive coverage for both personal injury and material damage to, for example, luggage or clothing after an accident.

Unlike accident occupant insurance, this policy also covers loss of income due to disability. This makes it a somewhat more expensive, but better choice for those who want maximum security.

The insured amount is €1,000,000

Legal expenses insurance
from 6 ,75 p/month

With legal assistance for motor vehicles, you get legal help with problems both at home and abroad. This could include a dispute over a bad repair, improper maintenance or when buying or selling the vehicle.

You can also get legal help through this insurance in case of criminal prosecution after an accident. Keep in mind that special conditions sometimes apply to use this motor vehicle legal assistance insurance. Legal assistance only applies to legal problems related to having and using your vehicle.

Own transport insurance (transportation)
v.a. 8 ,33 p/month

Own transportation insurance is a convenient addition that allows you to insure the valuables and tools in your van against theft or damage. This is because these items are not covered by standard inventory or van insurance.

You choose an amount up to €5,000 for which you are insured. The deductible is €100.

Van insurance deductible

The deductible is the portion of the damage you have to pay yourself. Not all insurers have a deductible. If there is, it is usually between €100 and €150.

If you have damage of €1,000 and a deductible of €150, you get €850 back. Insurers use a deductible so people are less likely to report damage.

Excess for windshield damage

A different deductible applies to windshield damage. If window replacement is not necessary, there is often no deductible. The insurer may refer you to a particular glass repairer in your area.

However, a deductible often applies when replacing a car window. The amount again depends on where you go for the windshield replacement. Insurers may refer you to repairers that have contracts with them.

Discount on your van insurance with claim-free years

By getting van insurance in your name and driving claim-free, you build up claim-free years. Damage-free years entitle you to a discount on the van insurance. This works similar to the discount you get on your private car insurance.

How much discount you get for one additional claim-free year varies by insurer. Basically, the insurer rewards you for your good driving record. At, say, 10 or 15 claim-free years, you have reached the maximum discount.

Pay attention to the value of accessories

When buying van insurance, pay close attention to the value of extra parts. Differentiate between parts that come standard with the car and those added later.

A navigation system that was already in the car when purchased is not part of the accessories. A navigation system installed later is, because it is not part of the official list value.

When using the van, the vehicle is often customized to suit your needs, such as the cargo space interior or plastering with advertising. These must be co-insured as accessories, otherwise they are not covered.

Frequently asked questions about van insurance

Am I required to insure my van?

You are required by law to have at least third-party insurance on a delivery van as soon as it is registered in your name. The RDW checks this regularly so you risk a fine if you do not arrange this on time.

A car that has already been transferred into your name must be insured in your name from the time of registration, even if the car is still with the seller.

What does a van premium depend on?

The price you pay for your van insurance depends on these things, among others:

  • What form of insurance do you choose?
  • What is the daily value of the van?
  • What is your zip code?
  • What company do you work for and where is it located?
  • What is the age of the regular driver?
  • Have you already accumulated claim-free years that you can use?
  • What are you transporting?

The premium may go up or down depending on these factors. For example, if you transport hazardous materials, the premium may increase because there is more risk of damage.

With van insurance, does it matter what items I am transporting?

If you carry flammable materials or items that can be easily stolen, this can affect the premium. Therefore, indicate this when you take out van insurance. That way you avoid problems if there is damage.

I use the van for courier service. Is this possible?

Yes, you can. On our courier insurance it is also possible to insure vans used for courier service. For other work or general business use of a van, van insurance is recommended.

Is there a maximum number of miles I can drive annually with my van?

Yes, usually you are only allowed to drive a certain number of miles per year with your van. You specify this number when you take out insurance. It is often between 12,000 kilometers per year and no limit. The more miles you want to drive, the higher the insurance premium becomes.
