What does WIA insurance entail?

WIA stands for the Work and Income according to Labor Capacity Act. This is the law governing disability. If your employee becomes unable to work, you, as the employer, are required to continue paying the employee’s wages for two years. After these two years, the mandatory continued wage payment ends, and the employee falls under the WIA. The employee will then receive WIA benefits from the UWV.

The WIA consists of two types of benefits: the WGA (Return to Work Scheme for Partially Disabled Persons) and the IVA (Income Support Scheme for Fully Disabled Persons). An employee receives a WGA benefit if they have been ill for 2 years or longer and are between 35% and 80% incapacitated for work, or an IVA benefit if they are fully and permanently incapacitated for work.

As an employer, you can also take out WIA insurance for your employees. WIA insurance supplements the WIA benefit that your employee receives in the event of long-term incapacity for work. By taking out WIA insurance, you are essentially providing an additional financial safety net for your staff.

Even if WIA insurance is not mandatory under your collective labor agreement, there are plenty of reasons for you as an employer to take it out anyway.
