What insurance do I need for an electric delivery bike?

The electric bike is on the rise. Not only among private users, but also for business use the pedelec is a very popular object. Especially in the big cities, delivery mopeds are increasingly replaced by electric bikes. Perhaps this is also a good option for you. What are the advantages of electric delivery bikes and what should you pay attention to when you take out a delivery bike insurance?

Electric bike benefits

For entrepreneurs in the hospitality sector, the pedelec is much cheaper to use than, for example, a delivery moped. There is no age limit for riding a pedelec, so an employer can employ young people who are not yet 16 years old. This saves on labour costs. In addition, an electric bike is better for the environment and you don't have to refuel every time. This is also better for the environment. This makes the electric bike an ideal replacement for the delivery moped.

There are currently two types of pedelecs on the market, namely the standard e-bike up to 25 km/hour and the Speed Pedelec up to 45 km/hour.

According to the law, for private use, pedelecs with a maximum speed of 25 km/hour are not (yet) subject to an insurance obligation. However, these bicycles are considered motor vehicles. What exactly is the insurance cover for electric bicycles?

Insurance for electric delivery bikes

Damage caused by private use of a pedelec up to 25 km/hour is usually covered by the Private Liability Insurance (AVP). This is not the case for business use of an electric bicycle. Damages caused during business use are excluded from the AVP cover. Damage caused with or by motor vehicles is also excluded from the third-party liability insurance for companies (AVB).

Does a delivery driver with the company's electric bike hit something or someone and cause damage as a result? Then the company's AVB will not provide cover. The victim can then hold the company personally liable. This can get very expensive, as the AVB does not provide cover.

It is therefore very important when you use (or plan to use) electric bikes for your business that you take out delivery bike insurance for these bikes.
