Truck insurance mandatory: what is the minimum requirement?

Third-party liability insurance is mandatory for every truck. This basic coverage only compensates for damage you cause to others with your truck. It is required by law and can be easily obtained if you have a valid driver's license. This coverage is therefore the minimum you need to be insured to drive on the road.

We carefully examine the type of truck, compare a large number of car insurance policies, and help you choose the right coverage.

Limited comprehensive insurance or fully comprehensive insurance: what is the difference?

Limited comprehensive insurance offers more extensive coverage than third-party liability insurance alone. You are also insured for damage caused by theft, broken windows, fire, or storm damage. However, damage to your own vehicle caused by a collision is not covered. Would you like comprehensive insurance (All Risk)? Then you are also insured for vandalism and material damage to your own truck.

We pick out the fine print for you

Insuring trucks with different superstructures

You can tailor your truck insurance to the specific bodywork of your vehicle. Insurance options are available for virtually every type of bodywork. Examples include:

Open

Closed with sliding tarps

Closed container

Container

Fridge freezer

Open with loading and unloading facility

Semi-trailer

A semi-trailer is often insured in combination with the accompanying tractor unit. In that case, the semi-trailer is covered by the tractor unit's third-party liability insurance. Separate insurance must always be taken out for the semi-trailer's comprehensive insurance.

Please note: some superstructures are subject to a specific risk assessment and require additional coverage or conditions.

Frequently asked questions about truck insurance

What is truck insurance and what does it cover?

Truck insurance covers damage you cause to others with your truck. Depending on the coverage you choose, you can also insure damage to your own vehicle with third-party liability + comprehensive coverage. The appropriate coverage depends on the use and value of the truck.

What types of truck insurance are available?

There are three main types: third-party liability, limited comprehensive, and fully comprehensive. Third-party liability insurance only covers damage you cause to others with your truck. Limited comprehensive also covers damage caused by fire or theft, for example. Fully comprehensive coverage also reimburses damage to your own truck.

Does the insurance also apply to international trips?

Yes, most truck insurance policies offer standard coverage in Europe. For international trips, you must carry an international insurance certificate with you. Also check whether your green card is valid in the countries where you are driving. Additional insurance rules apply in some regions.

How can I save on my truck insurance?

You can save money by comparing prices annually, choosing a higher deductible, or taking out a multi-vehicle policy. If you drive without making any claims for many years, you will also build up a premium discount. Limit additional coverages to what is really necessary and consider whether comprehensive coverage is necessary.
