Commercial Auto Insurance
Commercial auto insurance is a type of insurance specifically for vehicles used for work or business purposes. Whether you have a delivery van or use a company car to visit clients, this insurance protects you against damage, theft, or accidents. It is mandatory to insure your commercial vehicle with at least third-party liability coverage so that you can compensate others for any damage you cause.
Business or personal insurance?
Commercial auto insurance is more expensive than personal auto insurance. This is because cars are used more intensively for business purposes, and often multiple people drive them. Do you use the car only for commuting? If so, you don’t need commercial auto insurance. In that case, insure your car under a personal policy.

Supplementary Insurance for Your Company Car
Occupant accidents
As a driver, you are responsible for the other passengers. Even if you’re as careful as possible, you might still cause an accident. Passenger accident insurance cannot alleviate the personal suffering of the passengers or their surviving relatives. However, financial compensation can help mitigate the financial hardship.
In the event of permanent disability, a one-time payment of €15,000 is made, and in the event of death, €5,000 per passenger or driver. The advantage is that the question of who is at fault is irrelevant, which means the payment can be processed quickly.
Occupant damage
Passenger injury insurance provides coverage for injuries sustained by the passengers in your company vehicle. The injury must have been caused by an accident. Passenger injury insurance offers comprehensive coverage for both personal injury and property damage—such as damage to luggage or clothing—following an accident.
Unlike passenger accident insurance, this policy also covers loss of income due to disability. This makes it a slightly more expensive but better choice for those who want maximum protection.
The insured amount is €1,000,000.

Everything You Need to Know About Commercial Auto Insurance Coverage
About Commercial Auto Liability Insurance
You must purchase at least third-party liability insurance for your company car. This type of insurance is particularly suitable for company cars that are 8 years old or older. The exact age of your car depends on its value; after all, a 10-year-old company car can still be worth a lot.
The biggest drawback of third-party liability insurance is that the insurer does not cover damage to your own company vehicle. If there is damage, you can hold the other party liable, but you cannot do so if you caused the damage yourself.
Choosing Third-Party Liability + Limited Comprehensive Commercial Auto Insurance
The liability + limited comprehensive coverage naturally provides coverage for damage you cause to others. Your company vehicle is also insured against a number of causes of damage specified in the policy terms and conditions. This includes the following coverages:
- theft and damage resulting from an attempted theft
- lightning damage
- animal-vehicle collisions
- hail damage
- storm damage
- broken window
- fire and explosion
You should choose this insurance if liability insurance isn’t enough and comprehensive coverage is too expensive for what you get. Especially for an older company car, the most comprehensive coverage is often too expensive. You don’t want to pay a €1,000 premium if your company car is only worth €2,000.
Choosing Comprehensive Commercial Auto Insurance
This insurance policy provides third-party liability and limited comprehensive coverage, plus additional coverages, such as:
- Damage to one's own car caused by a collision
- damage to the company car caused by a slippery road surface
- the vehicle entering the water
- damage caused by vandalism
Choose comprehensive commercial auto insurance for a new commercial vehicle until it is about 3 or 4 years old. This is a general guideline. For example, you can also keep a 6-year-old commercial vehicle insured under a comprehensive policy. The key is to weigh the coverage against the premium.
As the vehicle gets older, its market value decreases. As a result, it makes less and less sense to keep the company car fully insured.
Deductible for Company Car Insurance
The deductible is the portion of the claim that you are responsible for paying out of pocket. Not all insurers have a deductible. When they do, it’s usually between €100 and €150.
If you have €1,000 in damages and a deductible of €150, you will be reimbursed €850. Insurers use a deductible to discourage people from filing claims.
Deductible for Windshield Damage
A different deductible applies to windshield damage. If the windshield does not need to be replaced, there is often no deductible. The insurer may refer you to a specific glass repair shop in your area.
When replacing a car window, there is often an deductible. The amount depends on where you go to have the window replaced. Insurers may refer you to repair shops with which they have contracts.

Frequently Asked Questions About Insuring a Company Car
When should you choose commercial auto insurance?
You may use a privately insured car to drive for business purposes and deduct those miles from your taxes. For example, if you drive to a trade show or a business meeting.
Do you want to deliver meals or transport goods? Then you’ll need commercial auto insurance. Is the vehicle registered to your business? If so, be sure to get commercial auto insurance, whether it’s a delivery van or a passenger car.
Am I required to insure my delivery van?
You are legally required to insure a car or delivery vehicle as soon as the license plate is registered in your name. From that moment on, your information as the owner is on file with the National Road Traffic Authority (RDW).
The RDW regularly checks whether the vehicles in its database are insured. If you haven’t yet purchased the required liability insurance for your car or van, and it’s already registered in your name, you risk receiving a fine from the RDW.
A car that has already been registered in your name must be insured under your name from the moment of registration, even if the car is still at the seller’s location. You are not required to have limited comprehensive or all-risk coverage for your car; only third-party liability coverage is mandatory.
What factors determine the premium for commercial auto insurance?
The cost of commercial auto insurance depends on the number of years without a claim and the type of coverage, just as it does with regular auto insurance. How the commercial vehicle is used is also important. A van used to transport people is at lower risk than a delivery van frequently used by a plumber. The type of vehicle also plays a role.
Are accessories covered under the commercial auto insurance policy?
With commercial auto insurance, you can choose which accessories you want to insure. This way, the insurance is tailored to your needs. Accessories are divided into factory-installed accessories and additional accessories that were added later.
A tow hitch is included in the car's new value, but you must insure it separately if you have it installed later. A delivery van that has been specially equipped for business use must also be insured as a separate accessory.
Company Vehicle Damaged After Work Hours: What Are the Consequences?
You insure a company car as a business vehicle, but what if, for example, an employee uses the car outside of working hours? Fortunately, company car insurance usually provides coverage even after working hours. Check the policy terms and conditions to be sure.
Can you get temporary commercial auto insurance?
Yes, temporary auto insurance is a short-term policy that covers your car for 1 day or 14 days with third-party liability (WA) coverage. We’d be happy to help you with that.
I use the company car for courier work. Is this allowed?
Yes, that's possible. With ourcourier insurance, it's also possible to insure company vehicles used for courier services.
