The company car insurance

Business car insurance is insurance specifically for vehicles used for your work or business. Whether you have a van for deliveries or use a business car to visit customers, this insurance protects you from damage, theft or accidents. It is mandatory to insure your company car at least third-party liability (TPL) to compensate you for damages to others.

Business or private insurance?

Business car insurance is more expensive than private insurance. This is because business cars are used more intensively and often several people drive them. Do you use the car only for commuting? Then company car insurance is not necessary. In that case, insure your car privately.

All about commercial vehicle insurance coverages

About the WA commercial vehicle insurance policy

You must have at least third-party insurance for your company car. This insurance is especially appropriate for company cars that are 8 years old or older. Exactly how old your car should be depends on its value. In fact, a 10-year-old company car can still be worth a lot.

The biggest disadvantage of third-party insurance is that the insurer will not pay for damage to your own company car. If there is damage, you can hold the other party liable, but you can't if you caused the damage yourself.

Choosing WA + limited collision commercial vehicle insurance

The WA + limited casco obviously provides coverage for damage you cause to others. Your own company car is also insured against a number of causes of damage listed in the policy conditions. This includes the following coverages:

  • theft and damage by attempted theft
  • lightning damage
  • animal collision
  • hail damage
  • storm damage
  • window breakage
  • fire and explosion

You choose this insurance if third-party insurance is not enough and all-risk is too expensive for what you get. Especially with an older commercial vehicle, the most comprehensive insurance is often too expensive. You don't want to pay a €1,000 premium if your company car is only worth €2,000.

Opting for all-risk commercial vehicle insurance

This insurance provides the coverage in the WA + limited casco plus additional coverages, such as:

  • damage to own car due to collision
  • damage to the commercial vehicle due to a slippery road surface
  • the vehicle becoming submerged in water
  • damage caused by vandalism

Choose all-risk commercial vehicle insurance for a new commercial vehicle until it is about 3 or 4 years old. This is a guideline. For example, you can also keep a 6-year-old commercial vehicle all-risk insured. The key is to weigh the coverage against the premium.

As the vehicle ages, the daily value decreases. As a result, it makes less and less sense to keep the commercial vehicle extensively insured.

Additional insurance for your company car

Occupant accidents
v.a. 1 ,12 p/month

As a driver, you are responsible for the other passengers. Even if you pay as much attention as possible, it can still happen that you cause an accident. With passenger accident insurance, you cannot alleviate the personal suffering of the passengers or their relatives. With financial compensation, however, you can ensure that the financial suffering is reduced.

A one-time payment of €15,000 is made in case of permanent disability and €5,000 per passenger or driver in case of death. The advantage is that the question of who is at fault is irrelevant so the payout can be settled quickly.

Indemnity insurance
v.a. 4 ,54 p/month

Passenger indemnity insurance pays out in the event of damage to the occupants of your company car. The damage must be caused by an accident. The damage passenger insurance provides comprehensive coverage for both personal injury and material damage to, for example, luggage or clothing after an accident.

Unlike accident occupant insurance, this policy also covers loss of income due to disability. This makes it a somewhat more expensive, but better choice for those who want maximum security.

The insured amount is €1,000,000

Legal expenses insurance
from 6 ,75 p/month

With legal assistance for motor vehicles, you get legal help with problems both at home and abroad. This could include a dispute over a bad repair, improper maintenance or when buying or selling the vehicle.

You can also get legal help through this insurance in case of criminal prosecution after an accident. Keep in mind that special conditions sometimes apply to use this motor vehicle legal assistance insurance. Legal assistance only applies to legal problems related to having and using your vehicle.

Own transport insurance (transportation)
v.a. 8 ,33 p/month

Personal transport insurance is a convenient addition that allows you to insure the valuables and tools in your company car against theft or damage. This is because these items are not covered by standard inventory or company car insurance.

You choose an amount starting at €5,000 for which you are insured. The deductible is €100.

Roadside assistance insurance Netherlands or Europe
v.a. 7 ,50 p/month

With roadside assistance insurance, you can count on fast and professional help wherever you want, all year round. Choose coverage in the Netherlands or Europe.

Company car insurance deductible

The deductible is a portion of the damage you pay for yourself. Not all insurers use a deductible. If they do, it is often in the amount of €100 to €150.

If you have damage of €1,000 and a deductible of €150, you will be reimbursed €850. Insurers use a deductible so that people are less likely to claim.

Excess for windshield damage

A different deductible applies to windshield damage. If window replacement is not necessary, there is often no deductible. The insurer may refer you to a particular glass repairer in your area.

However, a deductible often applies when replacing a car window. The amount again depends on where you go for the windshield replacement. Insurers may refer you to repairers that have contracts with them.

Frequently asked questions about insuring a company car

When do you choose company car insurance?

You may use a privately insured car for business mileage and deduct it from your taxes. For example, if you drive to a trade show or a business appointment.

Do you want to deliver meals or transport stuff? Then you need company car insurance. Is the car in your company's name? Then choose company car insurance as well, whether it is a van or passenger car.

Am I required to insure my van?

You are legally obliged to insure a (van) car as soon as the license plate is in your name. Your details as owner are known to the National Office for Road Transport (RDW) from that moment on.

The RDW regularly checks whether the vehicles in its database have insurance. If you have not yet taken out compulsory third-party insurance for your (van) car and it is already in your name? Then you run the risk of a fine from the RDW.

A car that has already been transferred into your name must be insured in your name from the moment of registration, even if the car is still with the seller. It is not compulsory to insure your car limited casco or All Risk, only the third-party coverage is mandatory.

What does the company car insurance premium depend on?

The price of a commercial car insurance policy depends on the number of years without a claim and the type of insurance, just like regular car insurance. Also important is how the commercial vehicle is used. A van that transports people is less at risk than a van that a plumber uses frequently. The type of vehicle also plays a role.

Are accessories co-insured with commercial vehicle insurance?

With company car insurance, you can choose which accessories to insure. This way the insurance fits what you need. Accessories are divided into factory accessories and additional accessories added later.

A tow bar is part of the new value of the car, but you must insure it separately if you have it fitted later. A van specially equipped for business use is also insured as a separate accessory.

Company car damaged after working hours: what are the consequences?

You insure a company car as a business vehicle, but what if the car is used by an employee outside working hours, for example? Fortunately, company car insurance usually provides coverage even after working hours. Check the policy conditions to be sure.

Can you get temporary company car insurance?

Yes, temporary car insurance is a short-term policy that allows you to insure your car for 1 day or 14 days with third-party liability (TPL) car insurance. We are happy to help you with that.

I use the company car for courier work. Is this possible?

Yes you can. With our courier insurance, it is also possible to insure company vehicles used as couriers.
