What is a Vehicle Registration Card?

If the owner/holder no longer has the vehicle registration certificate, a new registration card must be requested from the RDW. The RDW will send this, along with a new registration code, to the owner/applicant. The registration card will then have the same license plate number but a different document number. The fee for this is €31.50.

Registration Code

If the owner/holder still has the vehicle registration card but no longer has the registration code, they can request a new registration code through the RDW website.

The RDW will then send the code to the registered owner’s or holder’s address.
The cost for this is (expected to be) €20.00.

Apply for a vehicle registration card urgently

If the owner/holder no longer has the vehicle registration certificate and/or the registration code but needs a replacement vehicle registration certificate, a new registration code, or both on the same day, they can opt for an expedited application. The cost of expedited delivery of a vehicle registration card with a registration code is €200.00. Please note that no refund will be issued if the old vehicle registration card and/or code are later recovered.

Lost your vehicle registration certificate?

If you have lost a vehicle's registration certificate, you can apply for new registration documents from the RDW.

Requesting Vehicle Registration Documents in Writing

If you are unable to apply for your vehicle registration documents online, you can also apply for them in writing. Here are the steps:

1. Pick up the application form at an RDW office or request it by phone.

– You can request it by phone from RDW Customer Service at 0900 07 39 (€0.10 per minute).
– You can pick it up at the RDW customer service desk in Veendam, Zoetermeer, or Den Bosch.
– You can pick it up at an RDW inspection station.

2. Read the instructions, fill out the form completely, check the box next to “Replace vehicle registration certificate” under “Reason,” and sign it.

3. You can pay the amount due via online banking or through your bank.

A new vehicle registration certificate costs €31.00.

4. Send the form to the RDW.

The RDW's address is:
RDW Unit VRD
P.O. Box 30 000
9640 RA Veendam

5. You will receive the new vehicle registration certificate by mail at your address.

With standard mail delivery, it takes up to 10 business days to receive a replacement vehicle registration certificate.

If you have submitted an application using the application form, you will receive a new vehicle registration certificate within 10 business days after payment.

If you apply online, a replacement vehicle registration certificate requested and paid for before 8:00 p.m. will be mailed by the RDW the next business day. If the application is submitted on a Friday after 8:00 p.m., the RDW will mail the vehicle registration certificate the following Tuesday. Applications are processed in the order they are received.

An online application will be treated as an urgent application. Faster processing is not possible.

Missing or stolen license plates?

If one or both license plates are missing, you no longer need to apply for a replacement vehicle registration certificate. You can purchase new license plates from an RDW-approved license plate manufacturer. To do so, you (or someone acting on your behalf) must present the original Vehicle Registration Certificate (Part 1A) and a valid form of identification. If the vehicle has two license plates, two new license plates will be issued, even if only one is missing. The license plate manufacturer embosses the license plates with a raised duplicate code. The manufacturer also records that the new license plates were issued because the old ones were missing.
If your license plate is lost or stolen, the RDW advises you to always file a report with the police.

Missing License Plates and Vehicle Registration Certificate—What Should I Do Now?

If you are missing both your license plates and your vehicle registration certificate, you should file a report with the police. With the police report, you can obtain temporary license plates.
