Everything You Need to Know About Moped Insurance

Moped insurance doesn't have to be expensive, but your moped does need to be properly insured. You can compare good moped insurance policies at a low premium. We can help you with that.

It is mandatory to purchase moped insurance. This requirement applies to third-party liability coverage. This insurance covers costs resulting from the insured moped’s liability. The person in whose name the moped is registered is responsible for obtaining the required insurance. In the event of an accident involving the moped, the other party can contact the insurer directly to file a claim.

What does our moped insurance cover?

There are three different types of insurance to choose from when you purchase moped insurance. Third-party liability insurance offers the most limited coverage, but it is also mandatory. You can supplement this coverage with:

  • Theft and Fire – In addition to liability coverage, this policy also covers theft of the moped and fire.
  • Theft, fire, and collisions —the most comprehensive coverage. This coverage could be called “all-risk moped insurance” or “third-party liability plus comprehensive coverage,” although the term may vary among insurers.

Are you curious about the premium for these coverages? You can calculate it on Alpina.nl.

What kind of coverage is right for you and your moped?

Of course, you’d prefer to get the most comprehensive moped insurance, but the premium has to be reasonable. You’re not going to pay a sky-high premium for a moped that’s worth very little. For a new moped, you’ll want to get the most comprehensive coverage. A moped worth only a few hundred euros should be insured solely for liability coverage. In other cases, it’s a good idea to compare options and make a choice based on the premium amount.

What should you look for when comparing moped insurance policies?

Different insurers charge different prices for the same coverage. This depends on many different factors. It’s a good idea to pay close attention to the details to ensure that you get not necessarily the cheapest, but the best moped insurance for you.

Comparing moped insurance policies is more useful when you’re looking at higher coverage levels, because price differences can vary more significantly at those levels. It’s a good idea to pay attention to the following factors when comparing moped insurance policies:

  1. The policy terms and conditions (such as a specific lock or parking location)
  2. The amount of the deductible (the higher it is, the lower the premium—but you have to be willing to take that risk)
  3. Whether you get a discount if you pay your premium annually instead of monthly
  4. What benefits each insurer offers you

If you want to view these details, click “More Info” under the insurer once you’ve selected a coverage option during the premium calculation process.

Factors that play a significant role in determining the premium:

  1. Coverage
  2. How many claim-free years you've accumulated
  3. The age of the youngest driver
  4. Postal code
  5. Moped brand
  6. Moped Age

Tips for Affordable Moped Insurance

You can opt for a more limited insurance plan to save on the premium, but that’s often not the right approach. By comparing plans, you can also save a significant amount without compromising on the quality of the insurance. You can also lower your premium by applying your claim-free years or by switching to a different moped insurer.

Lowering the premium based on claim-free years

Accident-free driving is rewarded in auto insurance policies, and the same applies to moped insurance. Byaccumulatinga certain number ofaccident-free years, you can earn a significant discount on your insurance premium.

Switching to a Different Moped Insurance Policy

Do you already have insurance for your moped? Has it been more than one year since you purchased this insurance? If so, you can cancel the policy. After one year, insurance policies can be canceled at any time. However, a one-month notice period may apply. You can also cancel the policy during the first year. For example, you can do so if you sell the insured moped or if the insurer decides to raise the premium.

Insuring a Delivery Scooter

If you have a moped that you use for deliveries—such as food deliveries—we offer a special delivery moped insurance policy for this purpose.

Insuring a moped without a driver's license

The owner of a moped is required to purchase moped insurance. Insuring a moped without a driver’s license is more difficult, but we have the solution. We’ve created a comparison tool specifically designed to include only insurers that do not require a driver’s license. The driver is not allowed to ride without a license, but the owner—even without a license—is allowed to insure the moped.

Did you know that insurers have strict requirements regarding young drivers? That’s why it’s very importantto list the youngest driver.

If you let someone younger than the primary driver listed on the policy ride the moped, you’re taking a big risk. That’s because moped insurance comes with strict conditions, and the consequences of failing to meet these conditions are severe. Examples of possible consequences include:

  • No coverage; in the event of a claim, the costs may be recovered from the policyholder.
  • (Additional) increased deductible; this can amount to up to €1,000 in the event of a claim.

Additional Coverage

For a little extra peace of mind, you can also add various types of supplemental coverage to your moped insurance policy. These supplemental coverages range from a few euros to about 10 euros per month, and vary widely in what they cover.

For example, you can insure yourself and your passenger(s) against injury with passenger accident insurance; you can ensure you have legal assistance in the event of traffic disputes with motor vehicle legal assistance insurance; or you can receive legal assistance in recovering damages resulting from a traffic accident at home or abroad with legal assistance for recovery of damages insurance.

Additional coverage also means additional costs. If a particular type of additional coverage is useful to you, it’s a good idea to purchase it. It’s definitely worth those extra few euros. If not, it’s a good idea to take a critical look at it.

Frequently Asked Questions About Moped Insurance

If someone else rides my moped, is that person insured?

When you purchase moped insurance, it is tied to your moped and not to the person who purchased the insurance. This means you are allowed to let someone else ride your moped.

Can I insure a moped without a driver's license?

In the Netherlands, it is mandatory to purchase moped insurance if you own a moped. However, some insurers may have issues with insuring a moped if you do not have a driver’s license. In our comparison tool, we have created a special selection of insurers that do not require a driver’s license.

Will my moped insurance cover my damages?

Do you only have third-party liability coverage? In that case, you won’t be reimbursed for damage to your own moped. If your moped is damaged by someone else, you can hold the other party liable for the damage.

With Third-Party Liability + Theft and Fire coverage, you can only file a claim with the insurer in the event of theft or fire. For damage caused by a collision or, for example, vandalism, you can only file a claim with the insurer if you have the most comprehensive moped insurance policy.

Determining the Amount of Damages

The damage is often assessed by an expert. The insurer engages this expert and also covers the associated costs. The expert determines the amount of the claim. The insurer then pays out the claim amount. The payout under moped insurance is limited to the current market value of the moped.

Am I required to insure my classic car?

Yes, as the registered owner, you are required to insure all motor vehicles registered in your name. The same applies to a classic moped. You must purchase at least third-party liability insurance for your moped, but you may, of course, choose more comprehensive coverage. With third-party liability coverage, you are insured for damage you cause to others. Damage to your own vintage moped is not covered by this policy. To insure your own vintage moped against damage, you’ll need to choose more comprehensive coverage.
