Compare vintage car insurance

Comparing vintage car insurance is important. A number of factors play a major role in determining the premium; the so-called premium determining factors. Insurers let the premium depend on:

  1. The year of construction of the vintage car
  2. The value of the car
  3. The love of the regular driver
  4. The use of the oldtimer: commuting, daily use or just hobby
  5. How many kilometres per year the old-timer is driven
  6. The coverage. Third-party insurance is cheaper than All-Risk cover

Road tax on vintage cars

What exactly is the oldtimer road tax? When is a car a vintage car and when do you no longer have to pay road tax for a vintage car?

Storage clause/Night clause

If your insurance includes a storage clause , the vintage car must be stored in an enclosed area between sunset and sunrise. This is not a carport with a gate in front of it or a parking garage that is multi-accessible.

A variant of this clause is that the storage requirement only applies when the vintage car is within a radius of 1 kilometre from the home.

Stowage clause differs from company to company

Not every insurer stipulates a parking clause as standard. This differs per product, type and value of the vehicle. Therefore, when taking out insurance, always ask whether a storage clause applies.

Frequently asked questions about vintage car insurance

How can I calculate the premium for a classic car insurance?

Calculating your insurance is done in 4 simple steps:

  1. Enter your license plate number and personal information
  2. Choose your desired coverage: WA, WA limited casco or All-risk
  3. Information on the use of the car and the driver
  4. The calculation of the premium is successful

Once you have completed the 4 steps, you can immediately take out insurance for your vintage car. If you don't want to make a decision yet, you can also request a quote or record the calculation.

When do you no longer have to pay road tax on an old-timer?

Road tax is basically mandatory for all motor vehicles. However, an exemption applies to motor vehicles that were put into service at least 40 years ago. In some cases, you then pay no or less motor vehicle tax. For buses and trucks, this exemption only applies if you do not use them commercially. Read more about oldtimer road tax.

When is a car a vintage car?

Does the classic car insurance also cover the winter months?

There are insurers who offer insurance with a so-called winter break. In this case, you are not allowed to drive the car during the winter months. In exchange, you get a discount on the premium. Is there no winter break in the insurance? Then you have year-round coverage.

Does the classic car insurance cover touring?

If you use the vintage car for speed races, then the vintage car is not insured. But where is the limit? You can participate in a tour without a competition element. In that case, it usually won't be a problem for the vintage car insurance. Also, if the competition element is in the beauty of the car, the insurer will not make it difficult. To avoid later discussion, it is better to contact the insurer before participating in a tour. With the permission of the insurer, you can be sure that the insurer will not be difficult in case of damage.
