Getting car insurance for your BMW
From the iconic 3 Series to the versatile X5 and the powerful M models, every BMW combines performance with style. Their slogan is not for nothing Freude am Fahren; in your BMW you drive with pleasure. So it makes sense that the insurance of your BMW should be chosen as carefully as the car itself. Because of the high value of a BMW, standard car insurance often offers insufficient coverage. Because not only is the value of the car higher, parts and maintenance are also considerably more expensive. With a good car insurance policy that suits your specific BMW, you are assured of help in case of damage and theft.

Why standard car insurance is not enough
A BMW belongs to the premium segment and therefore requires more than a standard car insurance policy. More expensive models often boast powerful engines, advanced safety systems and luxurious interiors, making the value considerably higher than that of an average car.
Standard insurance covers only the basics in many cases, but falls short when expensive repairs, original parts or replacement transportation at equivalent levels are involved. For BMW drivers, it is therefore smart to choose insurance that takes into account the higher value and specific risks of their car.
Accessories and upgrades co-insured
BMWs are often equipped with custom options and high-end accessories, such as sport packages, advanced infotainment systems or special rims. These upgrades increase not only the driving pleasure, but also the overall value of the car.
- Is your BMW equipped with a Premium Pack, Innovation Pack or M Technology Pack? Physical modifications to your vehicle can usually be co-insured, as long as you notify the insurer. Often, accessories are standard co-insured up to a fixed amount. If the value exceeds this amount, you can easily co-insure it.
- Software-based tuning, such as chip tuning is usually excluded from coverage. Damage caused by performance changes through engine management or transmission software (e.g. in a Stage 2 or Stage 3 upgrade) is then not covered.
Claim-free years: impact on your premium
The more claim-free years you have accumulated, the more advantageous your BMW insurance premium will be. If you do not claim any damage during an insurance year, you build up one claim-free year. In contrast, if you make a claim, you lose claim-free years, which affects your premium.

New value or purchase value insurance for your BMW?
Are you the proud owner of a new BMW? If so, the new-for-old policy is often a wise choice. In the event of theft or total loss, the new-for-old policy covers the new-for-old price for up to 3 years. After purchase, a car quickly loses value. Without this arrangement, you will only be paid the current market value in the event of damage, which is considerably lower than the purchase price.
In the case of a used BMW, the purchase value arrangement offers similar security: in the event of damage or theft, the insurer will then temporarily pay out the purchase price. Both schemes are not part of the standard coverage, but are optional.
Additional security requirements in luxury sports cars
For insuring more luxurious BMW models, such as the 7-Series, 8-Series or X models, insurers often have more stringent security requirements. Consider an SCM-approved alarm system or a Class 5 vehicle tracking system.
Exactly what requirements the insurer imposes depends on the exact model, region and coverage selected. Sometimes these requirements apply from €75,000 list value, but for theft-prone models it may be earlier. It is important to check this carefully in advance in the policy conditions. If you do not meet these conditions, this may affect your coverage or payment in the event of damage or theft.

Frequently asked questions about BMW car insurance
How is the premium for BMW insurance calculated?
The premium is determined based on factors such as your age, residence, claim-free years, type of BMW, annual mileage and coverage chosen. Theft sensitivity and repair costs of the model also play a role.
Which insurance is best for my BMW?
The best insurance for your BMW depends on the age and value of the car. For new or expensive models, all-risk is often the best choice. Older BMWs are usually sufficiently covered with WA or WA+ (limited casco).
Is all-risk insurance necessary for a BMW?
All-risk insurance is recommended for new or valuable BMWs. This coverage provides protection against self-inflicted damage, vandalism, and collisions. For older models, WA+ or WA is often sufficient.
Are my accessories and options covered as standard?
Original factory options are usually included as standard coverage up to a certain amount. You can purchase additional coverage for more expensive or exclusive accessories.
Are there BMW models with higher insurance premiums?
Yes, sporty models like the BMW M-series or SUVs like the X5 often have higher premiums. They have more power, higher repair costs and are more susceptible to theft.
Is theft via keyless entry covered?
Yes, provided the insurer's security requirements are met. Some policies impose additional requirements on cars with keyless-go, such as a key security cover or additional lock.
Can I temporarily suspend my BMW and pause insurance?
Yes, when the license plate is suspended you can temporarily stop the insurance. Note that the car may not then be on public roads or driven. This can be useful for seasonal use or prolonged immobilization.
What additional coverages are wise for a BMW?
Additional coverages such as roadside assistance, passenger insurance or new-for-old insurance can make sense with a BMW. Especially with young or expensive models, these options can provide additional security.
How does claims recovery work with BMW insurance?
When damage occurs, you usually choose from a network of affiliated repairers. Many insurers work with authorized BMW specialists. You often retain the right to warranty and original parts when repairing through these partners.
