Can you drive your car on the road with code orange or red?
In severe weather conditions, codes are used. With code red, it is better not to be on the road. But does the car insurance company allow it?
KNMI has a reasonable idea of what we can expect in terms of weather over the next few days. For example, KNMI can issue a certain code for storms, wind gusts, slippery roads and poor visibility due to fog. The color of the code allows road users to judge for themselves whether it is safe to go on the road. With code red it is better to postpone your trip for hours or even a day, but that is not always possible. Often you have to go through it. But what are the consequences in the event of an accident? Does car insurance pay out if, for example, you go out on the road despite the warning of slippery roads?
What do the codes mean?
The color coding ranges from yellow (limited danger) to red (great danger). In between is the code orange. According to KNMI, the meanings of the codes are as follows:
- Code Yellow - Be Alert - Weather conditions may cause additional danger in traffic. You are urged to pay close attention and also adjust your speed to the conditions.
- Code orange - Be prepared - In this case, there is a high probability of danger from extreme weather. Do you do go out on the road? Be prepared for severe weather conditions.
- Code Red - This is a weather alert - Extreme weather is having a major impact on society. Basically, the message is, "Don't go on the road. Even with a small chance of very severe weather, the code can be issued. This is what KNMI does when the safety risks are high if it does occur.
Is code red a negative travel advisory?
Certain countries may be subject to a negative travel advisory. This is due, for example, to riots or war in a country. Are you going to the country or area despite a negative travel advisory? Then the travel insurance will not cover you. Code red is actually also a negative travel advisory, but this warning does not affect insurance coverage. So the car insurance will simply pay out in case of damage. The severity of a negative travel advisory is not comparable to the Code Red as we know it in the Netherlands.
Of course, that doesn't change the fact that it's better to stay home especially during code orange and red. But don't be afraid of car insurance coverage. For your own safety, don't seek out the danger yourself either.
