Apply for a new license plate
Are you looking to apply for a new vehicle registration certificate? If you have lost your vehicle registration certificate, you must apply for a replacement from the RDW. Only the owner of the vehicle can submit this application. You can request a replacement vehicle registration certificate through the RDW website.
A new vehicle registration certificate will be introduced on January 1. Read all about the new vehicle registration certificate here .
Vehicle Registration Card
If the owner/holder no longer has the vehicle registration certificate, a new vehicle registration card must be requested from the RDW. The RDW will then send a new vehicle registration card and a new registration code to the owner/applicant. The vehicle registration card will have the same license plate number but a different document number.
The fee for this is €31.50.
Registration Code
If the owner/holder still has the vehicle registration card but no longer has the registration code, they can request a new registration code through the RDW website.
The RDW will then send the code to the registered owner/holder’s address. The cost for this is (expected to be) €20.00.
Request a Vehicle Registration Card urgently
If the owner/holder no longer has the vehicle registration certificate and/or the registration code but needs a replacement vehicle registration certificate, a new registration code, or both on the same day, they can opt for an urgent request. The cost of expedited delivery of a Vehicle Registration Card with a registration code is
€200.00. Please note that no refund will be issued if the old vehicle registration card and/or code are later recovered.

5-U will receive the new vehicle registration certificate by mail at your address.
With standard mail delivery, it takes up to 10 business days for a replacement vehicle registration certificate to arrive at your home.
If you have submitted an application using the application form, you will receive a new vehicle registration certificate within 10 business days after payment.
If you apply online, a replacement vehicle registration certificate requested and paid for before 8:00 p.m. will be mailed by the RDW the next business day. If the application is submitted on a Friday after 8:00 p.m., the RDW will mail the vehicle registration certificate the following Tuesday. Applications are processed in the order they are received.
An online application will be treated as an urgent application. Faster processing is not possible.
Loss or Theft of License Plates
If one or two license plates are missing, you no longer need to apply for a replacement vehicle registration certificate. You can instead purchase new license plates from a license plate manufacturer authorized by the RDW. To do so, you (or someone acting on your behalf) must present the original Vehicle Registration Certificate (Part 1A) and a valid form of identification. If the vehicle has two license plates, two new license plates will be issued, even if only one is missing. The license plate manufacturer embosses the license plates with an elevated duplicate code. The manufacturer also records that the new license plates were issued because the old ones were missing.
If your license plate is lost or stolen, the RDW advises you to always file a police report.
Missing License Plates and Vehicle Registration Certificate
If you have lost both your license plates and your vehicle registration certificate, file a report with the police. With the police report, you can obtain temporary license plates.
