Home Contents Insurance what is contents insurance?

How does home contents insurance work?

Home contents insurance works as follows: you insure the total value of all your individual items in your home and receive compensation for damage in the event of almost any unexpected occurrence. In the event of damage, you report this to the insurer, who assesses the damage and then pays compensation.

How contents insurance works, step by step

In practice, comprehensive home contents insurance works in four clear steps.

Step 1
Choose an insurer
You can insure your household contents by comparing different insurers. Check how high the premium is, what risks they cover, and what the policy conditions are.
Step 2
Take out home contents insurance
After taking out home contents insurance, damage to your belongings is insured, unless excluded in the policy conditions.
Step 3
Your belongings are unexpectedly damaged
In some situations, your belongings may be damaged, for example by fire, burglary, water damage, or a falling tree.
Step 4
You report the damage and receive compensation.
You report the damage, provide evidence, and after assessment, you will receive compensation or a repair proposal in accordance with your policy.

This process essentially describes how home contents insurance works.

Why take out home contents insurance?

Home contents insurance is designed to protect you against large, unexpected costs. Your belongings may not seem particularly valuable individually, but together they often represent a large sum of money. In the event of fire, burglary, or serious water damage, you will have to replace everything at once. Comprehensive contents insurance ensures that you do not have to pay for this damage yourself, which makes taking out contents insurance definitely worthwhile.

The value of your household contents

The insured value determines the maximum amount that the insurer will pay out in the event of damage. Alpina's home contents insurance policies come with standard underinsurance cover. This means you no longer need to fill in a home contents valuation form, as was previously the case. Home contents include all items that are loose in the home and easy to move, such as:

  • Furniture and floor coverings
  • Clothing and shoes
  • Electronics such as TVs and laptops
  • Kitchenware and decoration

Items that are attached to the home, such as a built-in kitchen or bathroom, are covered by building insurance and not by contents insurance.

The coverage of comprehensive home contents insurance

Comprehensive home contents insurance covers damage to your belongings caused by virtually all unexpected events.

Examples of damage that is usually insured:

  • Fire damage
  • Theft and burglary
  • Water damage caused by leaks or precipitation
  • Collision or falling trees

Please note: damage caused by drops and impacts is not automatically covered for every product, such as mobile phones. For this, you can opt for additional 'Mobile Electronics' coverage when taking out your policy. You can read exactly what you will be reimbursed for in the policy conditions.

How does the claims process work?

After a claim, the settlement usually follows a set pattern:

Report the damage as soon as possible.

You send a repair quote and/or proof of purchase and photos as evidence.

The insurer assesses the damage

You will receive compensation or a settlement proposal.

Payments are often made on the basis of replacement value. For older items, the current market value may be used, depending on the conditions.

This is not covered by home contents insurance.

Even with comprehensive coverage, there are situations in which no compensation will be paid. Common exclusions are:

  • Intentional damage
  • Damage caused by own fault, negligence, or overdue maintenance
  • Damage that was already present when the insurance was taken out
  • Damage that is explicitly excluded in the policy conditions

In practice, these exclusions determine the limits of how home contents insurance works.

Frequently asked questions about how home contents insurance works

What does all-risk mean in home contents insurance?

All-risk means that damage is insured, unless it is explicitly excluded. The coverage is therefore often broader than with standard insurance.

How do I know that I am properly insured for my household contents?

You are properly insured if the insured value matches the actual value of your household contents. With Alpina, you are guaranteed against underinsurance. This means that you do not have to check whether the insured amount is still correct or use a household contents value meter.

Can I extend my home contents insurance?

Yes, you can extend your home contents insurance with additional cover. For example, you can take out additional insurance for specific expensive items and valuable possessions, such as jewelry or art. Valuables insurance is often used for this purpose. Additional cover is also available for mobile electronics.

In addition, you can take out other home insurance policies, such as building insurance or liability insurance, to ensure that your entire living situation is properly covered. This way, you can be sure that your home is insured against all major risks.

How does damage work with home contents insurance?

You report the damage to your insurer, provide evidence, and, after assessment, receive compensation or a repair proposal in accordance with the policy conditions.

Does home contents insurance also apply when you move house?

Yes, you can usually transfer your insurance to your new home. You provide your new address and check whether the insured value is still correct.

Is damage to multiple items at the same time covered as standard?

Yes, damage to multiple items is also covered as standard under home contents insurance, as long as the damage falls within the insured amount and is not excluded in the policy conditions. This is because you insure your contents as a whole, not per individual item.
