Just how mandatory is boat insurance, really?
In the Netherlands, you are not legally required to purchase boat insurance. However, there are exceptions to this rule, and if you plan to take your boat abroad, different rules often apply. In this blog post, I’ll discuss when it is mandatory to insure your boat, which boats are often already insured, and why a responsible boat owner should at least have liability insurance for their boat.
When It Is Mandatory to Insure Your Boat in the Netherlands
In principle, it is not mandatory to insure your boat in the Netherlands. However, in some cases, you are required to have at least third-party liability insurance for your boat. For example, if you:
- You want to dock your boat at certain marinas
- You want to compete in races with your boat
- At a boat storage facility
- On some waterways (or parts thereof)
When It Is Mandatory to Insure Your Boat Abroad
In some countries, it is mandatory to insure your boat. Countries around the Mediterranean, in particular, often have this requirement. For example, the following countries have this requirement:
- Spain
- Italy
- Croatia
- Greece
In these countries, you can prove your coverage with an international insurance certificate. You can request this certificate from your insurer or insurance agent before you go on vacation. This certificate may vary by country. For example, there is a special certificate for Italy that is valid only in Italy.
Are you planning to travel abroad with your boat? If so, make sure you have an international insurance certificate or an Italian certificate. Otherwise, you may be in for some unpleasant surprises when you take your boat out on the water during your vacation.
Boats Covered by Your Standard Liability Insurance
Standard third-party liability insurance covers damage you cause to others. Boats covered by this policy include:
- Canoes
- Rowing Boats
- Windsurfing Boards
- Sailboats with a sail area of less than 16 m²
- Motorboats with a power output of less than 4 pk
Please note that if your boat’s engine has a power output of exactly 4 pk, it is no longer covered by your liability insurance.
Standard liability insurance typically provides worldwide coverage. So even if you take your boat, canoe, or sailboard on vacation, you’re still covered for damage to third parties. Just to be sure, take a moment to review yourliability insurancepolicy here.
Why It's Wise to Insure Your Boat with at Least Third-Party Liability Coverage
Dutch waters are getting busier and busier. This means the risk of accidents is increasing. For this reason, it’s wise to take out at least third-party liability insurance for your boat. After all, accidents can happen in the blink of an eye. This insurance covers any damage you cause to others. These costs can be very high in the event of personal injury.
Liability insurance doesn't have to cost a lot either; you can get liability insurance for as little as €60 per year (depending on your boat and situation), and signing up doesn't have to be a hassle. In just ten minutes, you can calculate your premium and purchase coverage for your boat online with immediate coverage.
