Should I insure a fast motorboat?
A fast motorboat is a small vessel that is shorter than 20 meters and travels faster than 20 kilometers per hour. Watercraft are also considered fast powerboats. Have you purchased or are you planning to purchase a fast powerboat? Then you are probably wondering if it is mandatory to insure this boat. Boat insurance ensures that you are insured in case of damage. You can choose different coverages, namely WA, WA + Limited Casco or Allrisk.
Insure a fast motorboat not mandatory, but wise!
In the Netherlands it is not mandatory to insure your motorboat. However, WA boat insurance is mandatory in some situations. This is for example at competitions, in a marina, a boat shed or on (part of) waterways. In addition, it is mandatory in the Netherlands to register your fast motorboat. The Dutch government requires registration of a fast motorboat for almost all inland waters. You register a fast motorboat, including personal watercraft, at the RDW.
Do you ever take your (fast) motorboat abroad? If so, boat insurance may be required by law. For example, this is often in countries around the Mediterranean, such as Greece, Croatia, Italy and Spain. In these countries, you can prove your coverage with an international certificate of insurance. You can request this certificate from your insurer or intermediary before you go on vacation.
Why it makes sense to insure your fast powerboat
Despite the fact that insuring your fast motorboat is not mandatory, it is wise to do it. After all, it is becoming increasingly crowded on Dutch waters. This increases the chance of an accident(s). It is therefore wise to have at least a WA boat insurance for your fast motorboat. With a WA boat insurance, damage you cause to other boats is covered. Repair costs for damage to a boat can sometimes be high. Moreover, third-party insurance does not have to cost a lot.
