Are you allowed to drive on the road when the alert level is orange or red?
In the Netherlands, color codes issued by the KNMI are used during extreme weather conditions. These include storms, icy roads, strong gusts of wind, or poor visibility due to fog. These codes help you assess whether it’s safe to drive. With a red code, driving is actually discouraged. But what does this mean for your car insurance if you decide to drive anyway?
What do the codes mean?
Code Yellow – Be Alert
Weather conditions may create additional hazards on the road. You are urged to pay close attention and adjust your speed to the conditions.
Code Orange – Be Prepared
There is a high risk of danger due to extreme weather. If you do decide to hit the road, be prepared for severe conditions.
Code Red – Weather Alert
Extreme weather has a major impact on society. Essentially, the message is: do not go out on the roads. The alert can be issued even if there is only a small chance of very severe weather. The KNMI issues it when the safety risks are high should such weather actually occur.
Are you covered under Code Red?
The answer is yes: you’re still covered during a Code Red alert. If you adjust your driving behavior and speed during hazardous weather, the insurer will pay out the same amount as usual in the event of damage, even if a warning is in effect. The terms and conditions of a car insurance policy also do not state that your car is uninsured during a Code Red. This is different from a negative travel advisory for a foreign country: if you travel there anyway, your travel insurance will not provide coverage. During a Code Red in the Netherlands, however, your car insurance will pay out as usual.
Reckless driving
It is sometimes said that drivers who take to the road despite a Code Red warning are more likely to engage in reckless driving. This is considered irresponsible and dangerous driving that increases the risk of damage. Damage caused by reckless driving is excluded by insurers. However, a Code Red warning does not automatically lead to reckless driving. Each situation is assessed on a case-by-case basis.

Do you have to drive even though the alert level is orange or red? If so, adjust your driving style:
- Be extra alert and look far ahead.
- Accelerate smoothly and brake gently.
- Keep a safe distance.
