Driving without a valid license, am I still insured?
An investigation by NOS on October 19, 2018 shows that thousands of people are driving around without a valid driving license. The driving license of these people has been declared invalid, but they have not subsequently sent this license to the CBR. Driving without a valid driving license can have major consequences.
Driving without a valid license
Since 2016, the CBR has identified more than 5,000 people as holding an invalid driver’s license. Over the past three years, the police have stopped nearly 3,000 people who were carrying an invalid driver’s license. For example, a driver’s license is declared invalid for older people who are no longer capable of driving or for people caught driving under the influence of alcohol. Carrying an invalid driver’s license can result in a fine of 240 euros. If you drive with an invalid license, this fine can even rise to 8,300 euros, and you risk a prison sentence of up to three months.
Will compensation be paid after an accident?
Chances are that driving without a valid license will result in more than a fine. When an accident is caused by someone without a valid driver's license, insurance companies may decide not to compensate for their own damages. However, any property or personal injury damages suffered by the other party are often compensated. The insurance company then tries to recover these damages from the person who caused the accident. This amount can be high, especially when there is personal injury or someone becomes disabled because of your actions. This also applies when you are driving on the road with an expired driver's license.
