What does the report say?

The APK inspection report contains the results of your APK inspection. The APK inspection report is prepared by an APK inspector. The APK inspector lists three categories: repair items, advisory items, and failure items. Based on this, a determination is made as to whether your car passes or fails the inspection. You will also find the APK expiration date in the inspection report. The car must be inspected again before the expiration date. After the expiration date, you may no longer drive the car, except when traveling to an inspection station. You must also be able to prove that you have an appointment to have the car re-inspected.

What are APK inspection points?

When conducting an APK inspection, an inspector checks various APK inspection items. These include items requiring repair, items for which recommendations are given, and items that result in failure. Tires, for example, are an important inspection item. The inspector checks for damage and tread depth. Other items checked include the lights, seat belts, and bodywork.

Repair items are issues that must be fixed before approval can be granted. If you have these issues repaired, your car will pass the APK inspection. If you decide not to have the repairs done, the APK inspector will fail the car.

What are rejection points?

Failure points are the issues that caused the car to fail its inspection. If a car fails its APK inspection, it is no longer suitable for use on public roads. It must then be repaired. If repairing it no longer makes sense for you, you can sell the car, trade it in, or take it to a junkyard. There may always be someone else for whom repairing it does make sense.

Advisory items are issues that do not immediately result in a vehicle failing the APK inspection, but that you will need to replace or repair soon. For example, advisory items regarding tires, brakes, seat belts, and airbags. Over time, these components wear out and will need to be replaced in the future. An APK inspector can accurately assess this and provide you with clear advice on the matter.

Should you keep the inspection report in the car?

In the Netherlands, it is not mandatory to keep the APK inspection report in your car. In some other countries, however, it is mandatory. That’s why it’s important to keep the report in a safe place anyway. So always check whether you’re required to carry your inspection certificate with you when you go on vacation abroad with your car. You can also keep it in your glove compartment as a matter of course. That way, you can be sure you always have it with you.

Is the APK inspection report available online?

When you have your car inspected, you will always receive a paper copy of the APK inspection report. You cannot view the report online. However, by performing a license plate check, you can see online when your APK expires. You can do this on the RDW website. Enter your car’s license plate number. You will then be able to view the vehicle’s historical data. Because the license plate check is public, it only displays non-sensitive information about the vehicle. In addition to the APK expiration date, you can also see, for example, how many kilograms the vehicle can tow, how many seats it has, and when the vehicle was first registered in the Netherlands.

Can you request the APK inspection report?

If you have lost your APK inspection report, you can request a copy. You can do this at an RDW inspection station, the RDW customer service desk, or at the garage where the vehicle was inspected. You must make sure to bring the original paper Vehicle Registration Certificate or the license plate card (the credit card-sized registration certificate) with you. You will then receive a copy of the APK inspection report immediately. A replacement inspection report costs €16.
