What does an APK re-inspection involve?
If a vehicle fails the APK inspection, the inspection station issues an inspection report indicating the areas in which the vehicle does not meet the APK inspection requirements. The vehicle owner is responsible for correcting the defects before a re-inspection can take place.
An APK re-inspection is a new inspection
The RDW considers a re-inspection for the APK to be a completely new inspection. It is therefore possible that other issues may be found during a re-inspection, especially if you go to a different inspection station or have a different inspector during the vehicle’s re-inspection. It is therefore quite possible that, during a re-inspection, the vehicle will still be—or once again be—failed on other grounds.
If you believe the vehicle was unfairly rejected and you are unable to reach an agreement with the relevant vehicle inspection agency, you can request a re-inspection from the RDW. You will need an inspection report if you wish to appeal the inspection results.
When is the next vehicle inspection (APK)?
Did your car fail the APK inspection? The APK inspection report you receive will list the reasons why the car failed. You must have these defects repaired before a re-inspection can take place. If the car fails the APK inspection and the expiration date has passed, you have 2 months to repair the car. Please note: During those 2 months, you may not drive the car, except when traveling to the garage for the re-inspection. In that case, you must be able to prove that you have an appointment at the garage. If the car has not been approved after 2 months, you will automatically receive a fine from the RDW. If you want to avoid a fine, you can also temporarily suspend the registration. The APK requirement is then suspended for the duration of the suspension. As soon as the suspension expires, the APK requirement applies again as usual.
How much does an APK re-inspection cost?
Since a re-inspection for the APK is a completely new inspection, you’ll simply have to pay the(same) fee again. However, some garages offer a free re-inspection if you have them perform the repairs. In many cases, this re-inspection must take place within two weeks.
In addition to the cost of the re-inspection, you’ll also have to pay for repairs, of course. These costs depend on the reasons for the failure. When a car undergoes an APK inspection, the inspector checks a wide range of items, such as the brakes, seat belts, tires, and lights. Naturally, some parts are more expensive to repair than others.
Vehicle Inspection
You should consider whether the car is worth getting re-inspected. Are there so many issues that it no longer makes sense to repair it? If so, you might want to consider trading it in, selling it, or taking it to the junkyard. There’s always someone who enjoys tinkering with cars and therefore doesn’t mind doing the necessary repairs. Or a garage that could really use the car’s parts. There are plenty of options if you don’t want to have the car re-inspected.
If you don't have your car repaired, you can continue to use it until the expiration date of the APK. After the expiration date, the car is no longer allowed on the road.
