Contents insurance costs
How much you pay for your contents insurance varies from one insurer to another. The amount of your premium depends on your contents, the coverage you choose and your risk profile. Count on 10 to 30 euros per month.
Calculate your premiumAverage cost of contents insurance
The average cost of your contents insurance depends, among other things, on the size of your home and the region in which your home is located. A large owner-occupied house probably contains more stuff, than a rental apartment with a smaller area. On average, you will pay in cheaper regions:
- for an average home between €10 and €19 per month.
- for a detached house between €13 and €30 per month.
These amounts are indications. Use the comparison tool and calculate the cost directly.
Accrual cost of contents insurance
What contents insurance costs depends on the following factors:
Value of your contents
What is the value of your household contents and therefore what amount should be insured? Use the contents value meter and calculate the insured value.
The coverage chosen
How comprehensive should it be? For example, do you want outdoor coverage?
The deductible
The higher the deductible you choose, the more discount you have on the premium.
Number of family members
What is your family composition? A family usually has more stuff than a single person.
Residence
Statistically, the risk of damage is higher in Amsterdam than in rural Groningen. The higher the risk of burglary, the higher the premium.
Nature of construction
The material of the home and roof affects the premium. A home made of wood is more likely to have fire damage than one made of stone.
BORG Certificate
If your home is properly secured against burglary, you often get a discount on your premium. You must submit a valid BORG certificate or the police mark 'safe living' for this.
Cost of additional coverages
The cost of additional coverages with household contents insurance varies by coverage and insurer. If you combine multiple coverages, the premium goes up. Sometimes you also benefit from package discounts in, for example, home insurance.
- Glass breakage coverage often costs an additional €2 to €5 per month.
- Outdoor coverage for things like your smartphone and jewelry outside your home usually costs €5 to €10 per month.
- Valuables insurance for expensive items such as art or expensive devices such as a laptop costs between €10 and €20 per month, depending on the value you insure.
Why get contents insurance

Frequently asked questions about contents insurance costs
Why does the premium vary by region?
The premium for contents insurance is based in part on the risk of damage or burglary in your area. In urban areas such as Amsterdam, the risk of theft is statistically higher than in rural areas, so the premium is often higher there. Insurers use damage figures and risk estimates by zip code area to determine the premium.
Is it cheaper to pay my household insurance annually?
With many insurers, you can choose to pay the premium monthly, quarterly, semi-annually or annually. Although the monthly premium usually remains the same, annual payment can sometimes provide a small discount or save administration costs. Check the terms and conditions with your insurer for this.
How does a combination policy such as home insurance work?
Home insurance is a combination of contents insurance and building insurance. By taking out these together with one insurer, you often benefit from package discounts. This makes the total premium cheaper than when you take out both insurances separately. You also have one point of contact in case of damage.
