Blue license plate

What does a blue license plate mean for a moped?

Everyone is familiar with a yellow license plate. It’s yellow with a black border and black letters. But did you know there are two types of license plates for mopeds? There’s also a blue license plate. The type of license plate your moped has depends on the vehicle’s maximum speed. There are, however, a number of different rules that apply to mopeds with blue license plates. Here, we’ll explain what a blue license plate is and how it differs from a yellow one.

What is the speed limit for vehicles with blue license plates?

If you have a moped with a blue license plate, it has a maximum speed of 25 kilometers per hour. Examples of mopeds with blue license plates include a snorfietsora snorscooter. To operate a moped with a blue license plate, you must be at least 16 years old and hold a moped driver’s license (AM) or a car driver’s license (B). Insurance is required. For a moped with a blue license plate, just like for other motor vehicles, you must have at least third-party liability insurance.

Difference Between a Blue License Plate and a Yellow License Plate

The main difference lies in the moped’s maximum speed. A moped with a blue license plate has a maximum speed of 25 kilometers per hour, while a moped with a yellow license plate can reach 45 kilometers per hour. Riders of mopeds with a yellow license plate are required to wear a helmet, and since January 1, 2023, this requirement also applies to riders of mopeds with a blue license plate. In addition, a moped with a yellow license plate usually rides on the roadway among cars within built-up areas (with some exceptions), while a moped with a blue license plate rides on the bike path. What is the same, however, is that you must have at least an AM driver’s license and that you are required to carry moped insurance.

How do I apply for a blue license plate?

You can apply for a blue license plate for your moped through the RDW. Your moped must first be inspected by the RDW. During this inspection, they check whether the moped meets the requirements for driving on public roads. They also check the moped’s technical condition. You won’t receive a new license plate without passing the inspection. You can schedule an inspection appointment here. To bring your moped to the inspection, you’ll need a license plate. That’s why you can apply for a one-day license plate. With a one-day license plate, you’re allowed to drive to the inspection station on the day of the inspection.

After the inspection, you’ll receive the license plate card by mail within 5 business days. One business day later, you’ll receive a letter with the registration code. From that moment on, the license plate is registered in your name, and you must comply with all vehicle requirements. This means you must have a license plate and purchase moped insurance. You can buy a blue license plate from a license plate manufacturer approved by the RDW. Prices may vary, as each manufacturer is free to set its own price.
