Moped suspension

Are you planning not to use your moped for a while, for example because it gets too cold or because circumstances prevent you from riding it for a while? Then it's a shame if you keep paying for the insurance when you won't actually be using it. That is why you can suspend the moped. During the suspension you do not have to comply with the third-party insurance obligation. You can also (temporarily) stop your moped insurance in this case. At Alpina, you can read all about suspending a moped.

Why suspend a moped?

If you do not use your moped for a while, it may pay off to suspend the registration number. That way, you save on costs by not having to meet insurance requirements, for example. There are several situations in which suspending a moped may be appropriate:

  • You are a real fair-weather rider and do not actually use the moped in the winter
  • You are going abroad for a while, making you unable to use the moped
  • You are physically unable to use the moped for a while, for example because of a broken leg or surgery, but want to do so again in the future

Whatever your reason, if you plan not to use the moped for a while it makes sense to suspend it.

What exactly does suspending a moped entail?

Suspending a moped means you are suspending the vehicle's registration number. Once the moped is suspended, you do not have to pay road tax and you have no MOT obligation. You also do not have to meet insurance requirements. You can suspend your moped for 1, 2 or 3 years. As soon as you request the suspension, it takes effect immediately. You cannot suspend your moped for a date in the future. When the suspension period expires, you must immediately resume compliance with vehicle obligations. Of course, you can also choose to extend the suspension.

How can I suspend a moped?

You can suspend your moped in two different ways: online or at the counter. Online is often the fastest and easiest way. If you prefer not to arrange the suspension online, you can also do it at the counter. For example, you can do this at a license plate counter, RDW inspection station or RDW desk.

Online moped suspension

Suspending a moped online can be done 24 hours a day. By logging in with your DigiD, you can easily enter the correct information. To suspend a moped online you can follow the following steps:

  1. Go to "Request suspension or renewal. Then log in with your DigiD. You will then enter the RDW service
  2. Select the license plate number of the vehicle you wish to suspend
  3. Select how long you want to suspend the vehicle (1,2 or 3 years)
  4. Pay the cost of the suspension via iDeal
  5. You will then receive an email confirming the application
  6. The license plate is suspended as soon as you receive a second e-mail from the RDW. This e-mail also contains the end date of your suspension. This e-mail is proof of your suspension, so it is important that you keep it safe.

Moped suspension via ticket office

You can also arrange the suspension through a counter. To suspend your moped through a counter, you can follow the following steps:

  1. Go to a license plate counter, RDW inspection station or RDW desk
  2. Bring the registration certificate and transfer slip OR the registration card and registration code. Don't forget a valid ID as well.
  3. Choose how long you want to suspend the vehicle (1,2 or 3 years)
  4. Pay the cost of the suspension
  5. You will then receive a suspension report from the employee that also includes the end date of the suspension. This is your proof of suspension, therefore it is important that you keep it safe.

When to suspend moped?

You suspend the moped the moment you no longer want to use it. This is because you cannot request a suspension for a date in the future; as soon as you request the suspension, it takes effect immediately. Not sure how long you want to suspend your moped? You can suspend your moped for 1, 2 or 3 years. If, after this time, you would like the suspension to continue for longer, you can extend the suspension period. If you end the suspension earlier, you will not receive a refund.

What does it cost to suspend a moped?

The cost of suspending a moped depends on the duration of the suspension. You can suspend the moped for 1 year, 2 years or 3 years.

Duration of suspension Cost
1 year €13,40
2 years €26,80
3 years €40,20

What documents do I need to suspend a moped?

If you suspend the moped at the counter, you must bring some documents:

You can bring the registration card and the registration code instead of the registration certificate and transfer slip. If you suspend the moped online, you can log in with your DigiD and select the license plate number of the vehicle you want to suspend.

Can I have someone else handle the suspension?

If you are unable to do it yourself, you can also have someone else apply for the suspension. If you have a vehicle registration card, that person can arrange it for you online. The person arranging the suspension for you must be at least 16 years old (for suspending another vehicle, the minimum age is 18). With a paper license plate, you can only arrange this at a counter. If you have someone else arrange the suspension for you, he or she can follow the following steps:

  1. The person arranging the suspension for you goes to "Request or renew suspension" and then logs in with their own DigiD.
  2. Then he or she enters the RDW service. To the question "Is it about your own vehicle?" that person must answer "No.
  3. To suspend the moped, he or she will need your registration card document number and registration code
  4. He or she selects whether the vehicle should be suspended for 1, 2 or 3 years.
  5. He or she must then pay the fee via iDeal.
  6. RDW then sends a confirmation of application to the email address provided.
  7. The license plate is suspended as soon as you receive a second mail from the RDW.

What are the risks of riding a suspended moped?

If you use a suspended moped on the road, you risk a hefty fine from the RDW. You are not allowed to drive or stand on public roads with a suspended moped.

Extend suspension

Once the suspension period has ended, you can terminate or extend the suspension. You can extend your suspension starting no more than 6 weeks before the end date of the suspension. The expiration date then simply remains the same as the end date of the old suspension. If you extend the suspension before 6 weeks, you will not keep the old expiration date. The date you extend the suspension will then be the new expiration date after 1, 2 or 3 years. 1 month before the suspension expires, you will receive a reminder letter from the RDW. The registration certificate of the moped remains valid. If you end the suspension you will not receive a new registration certificate after the suspension.
