Transferring ownership of a moped or scooter is important for both the buyer and the seller. The buyer then officially becomes the owner and assumes responsibility for fines and damage.

For the seller, this serves as proof that he is no longer liable. The vehicle's information in the registry is also updated. This ensures that everything is clearly settled.

Step-by-Step Guide to Transferring Ownership of a Moped on Site

Follow the 6 steps for transferring ownership of a moped locally.

Step 1
Ask the moped seller about the required documents. You'll usually need to bring the original certificate of registration and proof of transfer, or the vehicle registration certificate.
Step 2
Please bring these documents, along with a valid form of identification, to the location.
Step 3
Please pay the transfer fee of €13.10 (2025).
Step 4
The employee will then register the vehicle in your name. You will then receive a registration report. This is written proof of the transaction.
Step 5
You will also receive the certificate of indemnification. Give the certificate of indemnification to the seller.
Step 6
From that moment on, you are liable for the obligations of a vehicle registration holder. For example, you must purchase moped insurance. You are legally required to have at leastthird-party liability insurancefor your moped.
Step 7

The RDW will send you the new registration card on the same business day (if the registration number was transferred before 4:00 p.m.) or the next business day.

Congratulations! You are now the new owner of the moped.

Certificate of Indemnity

When the moped is transferred, the license plate is registered in the new owner's name. You will then receive a certificate of release. This certificate is for the seller of the moped.

This allows the seller to prove that the license plate of the moped being sold is no longer registered in his or her name. The seller is therefore no longer responsible for the obligations of a license plate holder.

Transferring ownership of your moped online is very easy through the RDW website. You'll need to install the DigiD app beforehand, though.

Requirements for Transferring Ownership of a Moped Online

There are a number of requirements for transferring ownership of a moped online:

  • You must have a vehicle registration card and a registration code. You cannot transfer ownership of the moped online if you have a paper registration certificate.
  • You are a private individual or own a sole proprietorship.
  • You must have the DigiD app with ID verification. If you don't have it, you'll need to raise your DigiD login level once by verifying your ID.
  • You must have a valid Dutch ID.

How to Transfer Ownership of a Moped Online in 5 Steps

Transferring ownership of a moped online is very easy. Just follow these 5 steps:

Step 1
Go to the "Vehicle Transfer" section on the RDW website. You will then be taken to the DigiD screen. Log in here.
Step 2
Follow the on-screen instructions.
Step 3
Pay the fee of €13.10 (2025) using iDEAL | Wero. The vehicle will not be transferred immediately after you pay. The RDW must first process the payment. This usually takes a few hours at most.
Step 4
After payment, you will receive an email confirming that your request is being processed. The email will also include a link that allows you to track the status of your request.
Step 5
You will then receive a second email stating that the moped has been transferred. The moped is not actually transferred until you receive the second email. From that moment on, you are responsible for the APK inspection and the motor vehicle tax, and you are required to purchase moped insurance.
Step 6
You will also receive a third email containing a link to the certificate of clearance, the registration report, and the first part of the registration code. Give the certificate of clearance to the seller.

Finally, you will receive the registration card and the second part of the registration code by mail.

Congratulations! You are now the new owner of the moped.
