The best coverage for your moped
When you take out scooter insurance, you can choose from various types of coverage. The best coverage for your moped insurance depends on the age and value of your moped. With third-party liability insurance, you comply with the legal requirement and are insured for damage you cause to others. If you want more security, third-party liability + theft or comprehensive coverage also covers damage to your own moped, for example in the event of theft, fire, or a collision.
Here you can also take out additional cover, such as passenger accident insurance or passenger damage insurance. Switching to a new moped insurance policy is very easy. In most cases, you will receive immediate (provisional) cover and can take to the road with peace of mind.
Costs of insuring a moped
The cost of moped insurance depends on a number of factors:
- The desired coverage (third-party liability, third-party liability +, or comprehensive)
- Your age
- Your hometown
- The number of accrued claim-free years
Cheap moped insurance

We work with various companies so that we can always offer you an attractive deal. When comparing insurance policies, also consider the purchase price of your moped so that you choose the right coverage.
Claim-free years with moped insurance
With moped insurance, you build up claim-free years. For every year that you do not claim any damage from the insurer, you receive a claim-free year. This gives you a no-claims discount that reduces your insurance premium.
Unfortunately, you cannot transfer your no-claims bonus years accumulated with a moped to a future car insurance policy. This is because insurers assess the risk of driving a car differently than driving a moped.
Insuring electric mopeds: what should you pay attention to?
You must insure mopeds before you take to the road. Third-party liability insurance is required by law for every moped. This insurance covers you for property damage and personal injury caused to others by your moped. This ensures you meet the legal requirements and avoids high costs in the event of an accident. Want more security? Then you can opt for additional coverage such as Limited Comprehensive or All Risk.
When taking out insurance, pay close attention to the deductible. This is the amount you pay yourself in the event of damage before the insurer pays out. A lower deductible often means a slightly higher premium, but you will have to pay less yourself in the event of damage. Therefore, compare carefully to see what works best for you. You can easily calculate your premium online.
Have you just bought a new electric moped? Some insurers offer provisional coverage, so you are immediately insured as soon as you hit the road, even if the policy has not yet been finalized. That way, you don't have to worry about driving uninsured.
You can also opt for additional coverage, such as roadside assistance or legal assistance. This can be useful if, for example, you often drive long distances or want extra security in legal matters. Take a good look at what different insurers offer and decide which coverage is relevant for you.
Finally, electric mopeds are popular with thieves. Therefore, always check that your moped is insured against theft. Not all insurance policies offer standard theft coverage, so pay close attention to this when comparing policy terms and conditions. Prevent theft by always securing your moped with an ART-approved lock.

Frequently asked questions about moped insurance
Is it mandatory to insure a moped in the Netherlands?
Yes, it is legally required to insure a moped with at least third-party liability insurance. As soon as the moped is registered in your name, you must take out insurance. You are not allowed to drive on public roads without insurance. Third-party liability insurance covers damage you cause to others with your moped, not damage to your own vehicle. You can easily insure your scooter online.
What is the difference between moped and motorized bicycle insurance?
The main difference lies in the maximum speed and use of the vehicles. A moped can travel at a maximum speed of 25 km/h and a motorized bicycle at 45 km/h. The insurance policies are very similar, but the premium for a moped is usually lower because the risk of damage is smaller.
Will damage to my moped always be covered?
Damage to your own moped will only be compensated if you have taken out limited comprehensive or fully comprehensive (all-risk) insurance. With third-party liability coverage alone, you will not receive any compensation for damage to your own vehicle. So make sure you carefully consider which coverage suits your situation.
Are electric bikes also classified as mopeds?
No, an electric bicycle is not a moped. A moped falls under the category of motorized bicycles, while an electric bicycle falls under the category of bicycles.
Is a souped-up moped insured?
No, a modified moped is not insured. This means that the insurer will not pay out in the event of damage and you will be responsible for paying for the damage yourself.
