Spring and summer are prime seasons for many classic car owners to enjoy touring in their vintage cars. Once autumn and winter are around the corner, many people park their oldtimer. Wise, because this is conducive to preserving your oldtimer. After all, the weather conditions that come with a Dutch winter are not good for an oldtimer. That is why it is wise to put your oldtimer in a garage during the winter. You could say that oldtimers, like bears, like to hibernate.
Why store a vintage car?
Although the weather in the Netherlands is unpredictable, we often have to deal with lesser weather conditions in winter. Although real winter conditions are rare, there are plenty of other damaging conditions. Think of snow, black ice, road salt, wet leaves and freezing temperatures. Fogged up windows are not good for an old-timer either, because old-timers often do not have air conditioning. This means that the windows fog up quickly and it can become too dangerous to drive.
What to look out for when storing an oldtimer?
When storing a vintage car, there are a number of points to consider. For example, a good oldtimer storage meets the following conditions:
- The storage is covered, so your vintage car is dry
- The room is well ventilated
- The temperature in the storage room does not drop below freezing and is ideally around 15 degrees.
- The humidity in the shed is around 40%.
- The depot is well secured against fire and theft
What does it cost to store an oldtimer?
What it costs to store a vintage car depends on the type of storage you choose. There are options for seasonal storage, but also permanent storage. Many garages charge per square meter, but some charge a fixed monthly fee. In addition, the price depends on the features of the parking facility. Some parking facilities have 24-hour access, video surveillance or work space. The larger the storage facility, the higher the cost usually is. Prices can vary quite a bit, but for a permanent storage you often pay between €150 and €300 per month and for a seasonal storage between €50 and €150.
