Classic Car Appraisal
Your classic car is a valuable asset. You don’t even want to think about your classic car being damaged or stolen. If that does happen, though, you’ll want to be properly insured. But exactly what will you receive in compensation in the event of damage or theft? A valuation report can provide the answer. The appraisal report determines the value of your classic car. That’s why having your classic car appraised helps ensure a quick claims settlement. An appraisal report can also be important when taking out classic car insurance. Keep in mind that insuring your car at its appraised value isn’t possible with standard liability coverage.
What does a classic car appraiser look for?
An appraisal is not the same as a technical inspection. It is intended to determine the value of your classic car. During the appraisal, an appraiser examines various aspects of the classic car. These include, for example, the make, model, trim level, and year of manufacture. The appraiser also assesses the condition of the classic car, any damage, and any upgrades that increase its value. The results of the appraisal are recorded in the appraisal report. A reputable classic car appraiser will appraise your classic car in accordance with Article 7:960 of the Dutch Civil Code.

How much does it cost to have a classic car appraised?
The cost of a classic car appraisal depends on a number of factors, but generally ranges from €150 to €200. Of course, the exact price varies depending on the appraiser. There are also companies that offer this service at a lower price, but it’s important to have the appraisal performed by a certified appraiser. Not only for your own peace of mind, but also for your classic car insurance. The appraisal report must be properly prepared by a certified appraiser; otherwise, you run the risk that the insurer will not accept it.
Classic Car Appraisal Report
After the appraisal, all the information is included in an appraisal report. The appraisal report serves to establish the value of your classic car. It therefore also lists the make, model, and trim level of your classic car. In addition, it provides information about the quality and condition of the classic car.
A valuation report is generally valid for 24 to 36 months, depending on the insurer. During this period, the value of your classic car is fixed as stated in the appraisal report. In the event of damage, you can therefore rely on the established value, ensuring there is no dispute with the insurer regarding the amount to be paid out. Have you made any improvements to the vehicle in the meantime? If so, it’s a good idea to have the report re-evaluated by the appraiser.
Overview of classic car appraisers in the Netherlands
It is important to have your classic car appraised by a certified appraiser. A person may call themselves a certified classic car appraiser if they are certified and meet the criteria established by the VRT and TMV. A certified appraiser must have at least 5 years of verifiable experience in the field of appraisal.

PLEASE NOTE! Some appraisers are excluded
Some appraisers are excluded because they provide “excessive” appraisals. In other words, they assign an overly high value to the vehicle. Therefore, always check in advance whether your insurance company will accept a report from a particular appraiser.
Organizations and Regulations
When having your classic car appraised, it’s not just the appraiser who plays a role, but also the rules and agencies that ensure the report is reliable and usable by insurers. To avoid disputes and disappointments in the event of a claim, it’s important to know which organizations are involved and what legal framework applies.
Organizations
NIVRE
The Dutch Institute of Registered Experts monitors the quality and professionalism of registered experts and appraisers. Through continuing education, their knowledge and skills remain up to date.
VRT
The United Register of Appraisers Foundation (VRT) organizes workshops and seminars to promote and maintain the professional competence and integrity of appraisers.
TMV
The Federation of Appraisers, Real Estate Agents, and Auctioneers (TMV) is involved in various types of appraisals and brokerage services for movable property, including art, antiques, and motor vehicles.
FEHAC
The Federation of Historic Automobile and Motorcycle Clubs (FEHAC) advocates on behalf of owners of historic vehicles that are 25 years old or older. Through its more than 200 member clubs, it represents approximately 70,000 enthusiasts and contributes to the preservation of the Netherlands’ automotive heritage.
Legal Framework
The legal basis for classic car appraisals is set forth in the Civil Code. This framework determines the amount of compensation paid in the event of damage or total loss, provided the appraisal was conducted properly.
Article 7:960 of the Dutch Civil Code (current)
Since January 1, 2006, this section has replaced Section 275 of the Commercial Code. The key point here is that only a valuation report prepared in advance by an expert provides certainty that the insurer will actually pay out the determined value in the event of total loss or damage. This provides clearer protection for classic car owners, although in practice insurers typically limit the validity period to 24–36 months.
Article 275 of the Commercial Code (old)
This article stipulated that the value of a vehicle had to be determined by an independent expert. Under the law, such an appraisal report was valid indefinitely. For a long time, this article provided guidance for classic car owners, but it was ultimately deemed too broad and outdated.
