Blue license plate for a taxi
Taxis can be identified by their blue license plates with black letters and numbers. Every taxi operator is required by law to display these. There are rules:
- when the taxi license plate must and must not be displayed on the vehicle;
- how to apply for a license plate;
- What to do if the vehicle is sold;
- for cross-border transportation.
Exceptions
Since the introduction of the taxi license plate, it has been unclear when it is required to be displayed on the vehicle and when it is not. The information sheet “Taxi License Plate” and the Passenger Transport Act provide answers to these questions.
Request
You can apply for a taxi license plate at the RDW Center for Vehicle Technology and Information (RDW). The vehicle must also have passed a technical inspection. In addition to the inspection documents, the application for a taxi license plate must be accompanied by:
A copy of a valid IVW business license
License holders who are not the owners of the vehicle must complete a “joint use declaration.” This form can be requested from the RDW.
A copy of an extract from the Chamber of Commerce (not older than one year) showing that the permit holder is a business owner.
The RDW verifies that the information is accurate and complete and then sends written approval for each vehicle. This approval allows the license plate to be purchased from an RDW-approved license plate manufacturer. The RDW website lists approximately 200 approved locations.
When selling a taxi
When the vehicle is sold, Part I of the registration certificate must be updated with the RDW. The word “taxi” will then be removed from the document. After receiving the updated registration certificate, you must visit a license plate supplier to exchange the blue taxi license plates for yellow ones.
Cross-Border Transportation
Transporting passengers abroad is permitted. However, it is not permitted to pick up new passengers abroad, with the exception of Belgium and Luxembourg. Blue license plates are not always recognizable as being from the EU. It is recommended to display an “NL” sticker while abroad. The RDW Center for Vehicle Technology and Information has prepared a statement in English, French, German, and Dutch that can be presented to police and customs officials as a sort of “taxi passport.”
