How old do you have to be to take a boating license exam?

There is no minimum age requirement for taking the Small Vessel Operator’s Certificate exam. This means you do not have to be 18 years old to take it. You may take the exam as early as age12. However, you will not receive the certificate until you turn18, and you may not operate a boat that requires a certificate until then.

If you pass the Small Vessel Operator’s Certificate exam before turning18, you will receive a letter of results. This letter does not authorize you to operate a boat yet, as it is not the actual certificate. You can exchange this letter for a certificate when youturn 18.
