What is a Canta?
A Canta is a covered vehicle for people with disabilities, designed specifically for individuals with physical limitations or disabilities. You do not need a driver's license to drive a Canta, and you must be at least 16 years old.
You are required to purchase insurance. This requirement applies to the owner or driver of the vehicle. Are you renting the Canta from a healthcare facility? If so, you, as the driver, are required to purchase insurance.
Costs of Insuring a Canta
The cost of Canta insurance depends on the type of coverage you choose and the value of your vehicle. The premium is largely based on the value of your Canta. For new models with a high list price, the premium is naturally higher than for an older vehicle with a lower market value.
On average, you'll pay about €50 per month for Canta insurance. For more comprehensive coverage with additional options, that can go up to €60 per month or more.
The coverage provided by your Canta insurance
You are required to purchase at least third-party liability insurance. You can choose from two different coverage options to insure your Canta.
Very few insurance companies insure a Canta. We offer insurance policies from Vereende.

More about liability insurance
Third-party liability insurance is the minimum and mandatory coverage you must have. This basic coverage ensures that your insurer will compensate for any damage you cause with your Canta. Both property damage and personal injury to the other party can be claimed from your insurer.
Damage to your own vehicle is not covered if you are at fault for the accident.
More about comprehensive auto insurance (all-risk)
Comprehensive insurance also covers damage to your own Canta—even if the damage was your own fault. The insurer will also cover the costs in the event of theft, fire, storm damage, and hail damage, for example.
With this insurance, you're well covered against various types of damage. The premium amount depends mainly on the value of your vehicle.
Additional Coverage
In addition to the mandatory liability insurance, you can choose additional coverage for your Canta. Choose from:
- Legal Assistance for Recovery of Damages. With this coverage, in the event of an accident, damages and related costs will be recovered from the other party if that party is liable.
- Passenger Accident Coverage. This coverage pays a fixed amount in the event of permanent injury or death of the driver or a passenger, regardless of who is at fault for the accident. It is a relatively inexpensive add-on that provides extra peace of mind, especially if you often have passengers in your car.
The policy expires every year on May 1
Insurance for a Canta always runs from May 1 to May 1 of the following year. If you purchase insurance on a different date, the insurer will calculate the premium on a pro-rata basis based on the number of months remaining until May 1.
You always purchase the insurance for one year and can easily renew it for the following year. The insurer sends you a new offer every year.
Insurance Card
If you purchase insurance online, you won’t have coverage right away. You’ll need to wait until you receive your insurance sticker. These days, it’s a sticker. The insurer will mail the sticker to you after your application is approved. Place the sticker in a visible spot on the vehicle. This serves as proof of insurance.
You are required to affix an insurance tag or sticker to your Canta. You may not drive on public roads unless the sticker is clearly visible on your Canta. The sticker indicates the year in which you purchased the insurance.
You can drive a Canta here
A Canta has a maximum speed of 45 km/h and is allowed to be driven almost anywhere except on highways. The same traffic rules apply to a Canta as to a mobility scooter.
- The speed limit on the roadway is 45 km/h.
- The speed limit on the (moped) bike path is 30 km/h in built-up areas and 40 km/h outside built-up areas.
- Maximum speed on the sidewalk: 6 km/h.

Frequently Asked Questions About Insuring Your Canta
Is it mandatory to insure a Canta?
Yes, that is required by law. As soon as a Canta is registered in your name, you must purchase at least third-party liability insurance. According to the Motor Vehicle Liability Insurance Act (WAM), third-party liability insurance is required as soon as the vehicle is registered in your name.
Even if you aren't driving it for a while, this requirement still applies. You may leave the vehicle uninsured only if you officially de-register it with the RDW.
How much does it cost to insure a Canta?
The monthly cost depends on where you live and your age. On average, you’ll pay around €50 per month for liability insurance. If you choose comprehensive insurance, the premium will be higher.
What happens if I don't insure my Canta?
In that case, you could face a hefty fine from the RDW that can amount to more than €400 per month. The RDW imposes a fine similar to that for an uninsured car.
What's more, you're uninsured while on the road. If you're involved in an accident, it could result in high costs. That's why you should always insure your Canta.
Which Canta insurance plan is the best choice?
You must purchase at least third-party liability insurance to comply with the legal requirement. An insurer bases the premium for comprehensive insurance on the replacement value of your Canta.
If you have an older Canta with a low current market value, it often doesn't make sense to purchase this comprehensive insurance.
Do you have a (nearly) new Canta with a high current market value? In that case, comprehensive insurance is the best choice. This policy provides much more extensive coverage. However, the cost of the premium, combined with the current market value of your Canta, may lead you to opt for liability insurance instead.
Sample Calculation for Older Canta Models
A new Canta costs €15,000. The vehicle is now old and has a value of only €1,000. Taking out comprehensive insurance for this Canta doesn’t make sense. The premium would exceed €500 per year. That’s not a smart choice for a Canta with such a low current market value.
Sample Calculation for the New Canta
A new Canta costs about €15,000. To cover damage caused by your own fault or vandalism, you can opt for comprehensive insurance that includes roadside assistance and legal assistance.
The total annual premium comes to about €700. Given the vehicle’s high current market value, this coverage is well worth the cost. Otherwise, a single major claim could easily cost thousands of euros.
Where can I find affordable Canta insurance?
You can usually find the cheapest Canta insurance through a comparison site. There, you can easily enter your details and immediately see which insurer offers the lowest premium for the level of coverage you want.
Compared to car insurance, Canta insurance is often much cheaper.
What is the difference between a Canta and a mobility scooter?
A Canta is a covered, motorized vehicle that resembles a small car and has a maximum speed of 45 km/h. It can seat 1 or 2 people and is permitted to travel on sidewalks, bike paths, and roadways.
A mobility scooter is an open, electric vehicle with a lower speed (max. 15 km/h) that is primarily intended for short distances.
Both are vehicles designed for people with temporary or permanent disabilities.
