Why standard car insurance is not enough
Standard car insurance often does not cover the true value and special features of a high-end Audi. Models such as the Audi RS6, e-tron GT or Q8 are equipped with advanced technology, powerful engines and high-end finishes. All elements that require extra protection.
Things like more expensive repairs, original parts and faster claims handling are also crucial. With a standard policy, you run the risk of underinsurance or unexpected costs. A specialized insurance does offer the coverage your Audi deserves.
Accessories and upgrades co-insured
You can configure an Audi entirely according to your own wishes. Think for example of a ceramic braking system, nappa leather or alloy wheels. Accessories are usually covered up to about €1,000. Do the accessories exceed the maximum value of the standard coverage? Then you can purchase additional coverage from many insurers.
In what way this is co-insured varies by insurer. Some insurers offer a separate additional insurance with which you determine the insured amount, while others include accessories in a broader package with additional coverage.
Tuning co-insurance
Do the changes go beyond standard accessories? Then it's good to know that tuning can usually be co-insured as well. Consider, for example, ECU tuning, aftermarket exhaust systems and upgraded intercoolers.
Have you modified your Audi with a sport exhaust, lowered suspension or chipped engine block, for example?
- Physical modifications (hybrid turbo, sport exhaust, custom air intake, rims) can often be co-insured if you specify them.
- Software tuning (e.g. Stage 2 or Stage 3 ECU upgrades or DSG software) is usually excluded. Damage resulting from this will then not be reimbursed.
Do you make any changes to your car? If so, notify your insurer and keep in mind that this may affect your premium.
Claim-free years: impact on your premium
The more claim-free years you have accumulated, the more advantageous your Audi insurance premium will be. If you do not claim any damage during a policy year, you build up one claim-free year. In contrast, if you make a claim, you lose claim-free years, which affects your premium.

New value or purchase value: how does compensation work?
For a new Audi, it is wise to choose the new-for-old value scheme. In the event of total loss or theft, you will be reimbursed the new-for-old value instead of the current market value. Is your Audi used? Then it might be better to look at the purchase value policy.
With this arrangement, the insurer temporarily pays out the purchase price in the event of damage. Depending on your Audi model and policy terms, you can take out these arrangements as an option.
Additional security requirements on sporty and luxury Audi cars
To insure luxury Audi models, such as an RS, A8, Q8 or e-tron GT, insurers often impose additional security requirements. Consider an SCM-approved alarm system or a recovery system.
The exact requirements depend on your insurer, type of car, region, coverage and list value. Often these requirements apply at a list value starting at €75,000, but especially with theft-prone models, it can sometimes be earlier.

Frequently asked questions about Audi car insurance
What is the best way to insure my Audi?
The best insurance for your Audi depends on the age, value and use of the car. For new or valuable models, All-risk coverage is often the best choice. Older Audi's are usually fine with WA or WA+ insurance. Compare several insurers and pay attention to additional coverages such as roadside assistance, replacement transportation and body repair at brand name garages.
Is All-Risk insurance necessary for an Audi?
A All-risk insurance is especially recommended for a new or expensive Audi, such as an A6, Q5 or e-tron. This coverage also covers damage caused by your own fault and vandalism, which in premium cars can save considerable costs. For older Audi's All-risk is often not cost-effective; WA+ coverage is then sufficient.
What additional coverages are wise?
Many Audi drivers choose:
- Breakdown insurance (especially for those who drive a lot or go abroad),
- Legal assistance in claims disputes,
- Indemnity insurance for occupants,
- Accessory coverage for expensive options (e.g., navigation or rims).
Are the premiums for an Audi higher?
Audi's are considered premium cars: sporty, luxurious and often with powerful engines. As a result, premiums tend to be a bit higher. Factors include:
- value of the car,
- type (e.g., A1 vs. RS models),
- age driver,
- claim-free years.
Does my Audi have a high risk of theft by default?
Certain models, such as the Audi A3 and A4, are relatively common in theft figures. Insurers take this into account. Additional security measures (class 3 alarm, vehicle tracking system) can lower the premium or sometimes even be mandatory.
Is an Audi youngtimer favorably insurable?
Audi's older than 15 years often fall under a youngtimer scheme. Then the insurance premium is often lower, but you pay tax on the fair market value (daily value), which can be interesting for business drivers.
How does damage repair work with Audi insurance?
In case of damage to your Audi, you can go to affiliated repair shops of your insurer. If you choose a brand name repairer or Audi dealer, it is important that this falls within your policy. Some insurers offer branded repairs as standard, while others charge a premium. Check this carefully to avoid unexpected costs.
Are there special insurance policies for Audi sports models?
Yes, sporty Audi's such as the S or RS line often carry higher premiums and stricter terms and conditions. Some insurers offer specialized packages with extra coverage for accessories or track use. It is smart to choose an insurer that has experience with sports cars to avoid hassles in the event of a claim.
What coverage fits a used Audi?
For a used Audi, the right coverage depends on the daily value and year of construction. If your Audi is less than 6 years old, WA+ or All-risk may still be relevant. For older models (6 years or older), WA or WA+ insurance is often sufficient. With WA+, pay particular attention to coverage for theft, storm and windshield damage.
