An expungement statement
A cancellation statement is a letter stating how many claim-free years you have accumulated during your car insurance. Until 2007, you always got this statement from the insurer when you stopped the insurance. Now insurers use a digital database: Roy Data.
Requesting an expungement statement
Have you never received an expulsion notice or have you lost it? You can try to request a new one from your old insurer, but this is usually no longer necessary. Since 2007, the document for cars and motorcycles is usually no longer given.
If you quit moped insurance or scooter insurance, sometimes you will still receive a cancellation notice.
Canceling a car insurance policy
To cancel literally means to terminate or discontinue. An insurance policy can be cancelled by yourself or by an insurer. So an expulsion statement is a declaration of expulsion, or proof that the insurance has been terminated.
Claim-free years are in Roy-data
Roy Data is the central database of EPS Foundation (Efficient Processes Claims Insurers). When you cancel a car insurance policy, the insurer registers your accumulated claim-free years in this database.
When you take out a new car insurance policy, the insurer looks in the Roy Data database to see how many claim-free years you have. As a result, you no longer have to give a termination notice when you take out a new car insurance policy.
Cancellation statement for lease cars
Have you driven a leased car for several years without damage? Then you can request a lease statement from the leasing company. This states the number of claim-free years you have. Usually your new insurer will accept these claim-free years as long as you have not made any damage claims.
A lease statement not only states how many years you have driven the car, but also how many damages you have incurred. With leased cars, usually all damages, including minor ones, are reported. As a result, the lease statement for lease drivers is often less positive.
How long is an expulsion notice valid?
A cancellation notice, like your claim-free years, is not valid forever. With most insurers, your claim-free years remain valid for 3 years after your car insurance is stopped. Do you take out a new car insurance policy only after a while? Then it is sometimes smarter to temporarily pause your insurance.
If you take out new insurance within 3 years, look carefully to see if the new insurer uses a 1-year or 3-year validity. This determines whether you keep your claim-free years or have to start rebuilding again.
Employer statement for a company car
Have you been driving a car from work and now want to buy your own car insurance? Then request an employer's statement from your employer. With this statement, you can show that you have not driven any damage with the company car.
Please note that not all insurers accept an employer's statement. This is because the document is easy to forge. Therefore, check with your insurer first to see if they approve an employer's statement.
Waiver in a divorce
In a divorce, you can choose to give some of the claim-free years to your ex-partner. If you have a car together, the car insurance is usually in one person's name. The other person then does not accrue any claim-free years, even if you both use the car equally.
If you break up, one of you may run out of claim-free years. To prevent this, you can give the claim-free years to your ex-partner. You do this by requesting a waiver.
Frequently asked questions about the royalty statement
Do I still need a cancellation notice for a new car insurance policy?
No, not usually. Since 2007, insurers have been using the central Roy Data database to record claim-free years. When taking out a new car insurance policy, the insurer checks this database. So you no longer have to provide a paper statement of cancellation.
What is Roy Data and how does it work?
Roy Data is a digital database of the EPS Foundation in which insurers register claim-free years when ending a car insurance policy. New insurers automatically consult this database to see how many claim-free years you have accumulated.
When do you still get an expulsion notice?
With moped or scooter insurance, sometimes a termination statement is still issued, because not all claim-free years are registered in Roy Data. A statement may also still be relevant in older situations (before 2007).
How long is an expulsion statement or claim-free years valid?
Claim-free years remain valid with most insurers for up to 3 years after your car insurance is terminated. If you take out new insurance within that period, you will retain your claim-free years. Some insurers apply a shorter validity of 1 year, so always check this in advance. After some time, your right to accrued claim-free years expires.
