What types of auto insurance coverage are available?
Choosing the right car insurance involves more than just comparing premiums. It’s important to carefully consider your insurance coverage. Are you satisfied with just liability insurance, or would comprehensive (all-risk) coverage be a better fit for your situation? There’s also an intermediate option: limited comprehensive coverage.
In the event of damage, the coverage you’ve chosen makes a big difference. The wrong choice could cost you tens of thousands of euros. On the other hand, you also want to avoid overinsuring your car. So it’s important to know which coverage is best for your car.
What types of coverage are available?
There are three standard insurance plans to choose from:
Third-Party Liability Insurance
Third-party auto insurance is the minimum coverage you are legally required to have. This insurance only covers damage you cause to others. Damage to your own car is not covered. This type of insurance is often chosen for cars that are 10 years old or older, but even then, more comprehensive coverage may sometimes be a wise choice.
Limited Comprehensive Coverage
Partial coverage provides broader protection than liability-only auto insurance. In addition to damage caused to others, it also covers a number of types of damage specified in the policy terms and conditions. The covered causes of damage are:
- Collisions with Stray Animals
- Hail Damage and Storm Damage
- Lightning Damage
- Fire and Explosion
- Window Breakage
Partial coverage is often chosen for cars that are 6 to 10 years old. Claims you file under this part of the policy do not affect your no-claims discount. This is also the case with comprehensive auto insurance.
Comprehensive Insurance (Third-Party Liability and Full Coverage)
This is the most comprehensive insurance plan and is often chosen for new cars up to about 6 years old. The most important addition in terms of coverage is that damage to your own vehicle caused by collisions is also covered by your own insurer. Vandalism damage is also covered under comprehensive auto insurance.

Expand Your Auto Insurance with Additional Coverage
In addition to these three types of insurance, you can also purchase supplemental insurance policies. These may include policies designed to protect your rights.

Passenger accident insurance pays out fixed amounts in the event of the death or permanent disability of the driver and/or passengers.
Occupant damage
This insurance covers property damage sustained by the driver and passengers as a result of an accident.

Who is covered?
Car insurance is always tied to the car, not to the person. That means that, in principle, anyone who drives your car is insured, as long as the driver is licensed to drive. There are exceptions, however, such as driving without a license or when the car is rented out:
Can I lend my car to someone?
Yes, you can lend your car to someone. Keep in mind, however, that the borrower cannot be the car’s regular driver. Be sure that the borrower is not the car’s regular driver. Young people sometimes try to insure a car under their parents’ names to save on premiums, but this is fraud and can have serious consequences.
Are the passengers also covered by the insurance?
Passengers are not automatically covered under auto insurance. However, they can hold the driver liable for their damages or file a claim with the other party’s insurer. You can, however, provide additional coverage for passengers through passenger injury insurance or passenger accident insurance.
Am I liable if someone without a driver's license drives my car?
It may seem unnecessary to emphasize this, but it is explicitly stated in the policy terms and conditions. You are responsible for the conduct of the driver of your car. If an unauthorized driver of your car causes damage, you, as the owner of the car, are liable for the damage.
Am I liable if someone whose license has been suspended drives my car?
Yes. Even someone whose license has been suspended is not allowed to drive. You remain liable if you give permission anyway. However, if your car is stolen and the thief causes damage, the situation is different. In that case, you must always file a police report.
When does auto insurance not provide coverage?
Car insurance covers damage you cause to others with your car. Depending on the coverage you choose, damage to your own car may also be covered. However, there are situations in which the insurer will not pay out or will later seek reimbursement from you. This usually happens in cases of improper use of the car, illegal activities, or natural disasters. Below are the most important exceptions.
Driving Without a Driver's License
You are not allowed to drive a car without a driver’s license. If you do so anyway, you will not be covered. A driver’s license suspension also counts as “no driver’s license.” Damages to others will be covered, but the insurer can then recover the full amount from you. This could amount to thousands, or even hundreds of thousands, of euros.
Renting Out Your Car
You can rent out your car through various organizations. For example, you can use Mywheels and SnappCar. Keep in mind, however, that your insurance provider does not offer coverage when you rent out your car. In the event of damage, you may be held liable for the cost.
You can often purchase supplemental insurance through these platforms, but there are still risks associated with renting out your property. For example, you could end up on a blacklist, which would mean that insurers would no longer accept you after a claim.
Driving Under the Influence
Driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs is prohibited and therefore not covered by insurance. Both substances impair your driving ability and increase the risk of accidents. If you cause an accident while under the influence, the insurer will refuse to cover the damage to your car.
Participating in a speed contest
Your auto insurance premium is based on normal use of the car. If you participate in a speed contest or street race, the risk of damage is much greater. In that case, the insurer may deny your claim.
Intentional damage
Damage that you intentionally cause with your car is not covered. The insurer may still compensate the victim, but will then seek reimbursement from you.
Uninsurable risks
Some risks simply cannot be insured, such as damage caused by an earthquake or flood. Such damages are too great for insurers to cover. However, coverage is often available for damage caused by storms, hail, or lightning, provided you have third-party liability plus limited comprehensive coverage or third-party liability plus full comprehensive (all-risk) coverage.
What if the auto insurance doesn't provide coverage?
In the exceptions listed above, the insurer will not pay. However, there may be other situations where you have to pay (part of) the damage yourself. How does that work exactly, and how can you minimize the costs?
Damage to Your Own Car
- Comprehensive Insurance: Damage to your own car is usually covered, even if you caused the accident yourself.
- Third-Party Liability (WA) or Third-Party Liability Plus (WA+; limited comprehensive coverage): Damage to your own car is generally not covered. Only with limited comprehensive coverage will you receive compensation for damage caused by, for example, lightning, fire, or broken windows.
Do you only have third-party liability coverage (WA) or third-party liability plus coverage (WA+), and did you cause the damage yourself? In that case, you'll have to pay for the repairs out of your own pocket.
Damage to Another Person
Third-party auto insurance is mandatory and covers damage you cause to others. The other party may file a claim directly with your insurer for the damage. The insurer will then contact you to hear your side of the story.
Recover Damages from the Other Party
Did someone else cause the accident? If so, you can seek compensation from that person. The other party’s insurer will then pay your costs. To do this, you must formally hold the other party liable. You can do this yourself, but often your legal expense insurance or claims assistance (usually included as an add-on to your auto insurance) will handle this for you.
Arrange for Repairs Yourself
Do you have to pay for the damage yourself? If so, you can choose where to have the car repaired. There are platforms where you can upload photos of the damage and then receive quotes from repair shops, such as:
- Fixico.nl
- Zibal.nl
- Carglass.nl
How do these websites work?
- Enter your information and upload photos of the damage.
- The websites request quotes from affiliated repair companies.
Carglass operates a little differently: they mainly repair minor paint damage and dents themselves.
