In the Netherlands, a driver's license is valid for ten years. As the expiration date approaches, you receive a warning from the government that you need to renew your driver's license. If your driver's license has expired, you are no longer allowed to drive your vehicle on public roads. If you do, you risk a fine of 90 euros. If you drive with an expired license for more than a year, this fine can even reach 340 euros. The rule that you must take the driving test again if your license has expired for a longer period of time only applies if it has not been renewed since July 1985.
