How can I transfer my auto insurance?
When you buy a new car, you’re required to have at least liability insurance. If you already have car insurance, you can transfer your current policy. But how exactly does this work, and is it always a good idea to transfer it?
Transferring Insurance to a New Car
You can transfer your current auto insurance to your other car. If you choose to keep your existing insurance for your new car, you must provide us with your car’s details in a timely manner. Your current policy will then remain in effect under the new license plate number. If the policy provides the coverage you need and the insurer offers the lowest premium, it makes sense to transfer your current auto insurance to your new car. Keep in mind, however, that the premium is based on your old car. Does your new car have a higher purchase price or a more recent model year? If so, your current insurance policy will likely no longer be a good fit for your new car. It is therefore wise to check whether your insurance still suits your situation when purchasing a new car.
Switching Insurance Providers and Accident-Free Years
What happens to your claim-free years if you decide to switch your auto insurance to another provider? You can simply carry over these claim-free years. Please note that you can only carry over full years. For example, if you’ve accumulated 4 years and 6 months with your old auto insurance provider, you’ll start over at 4 years with your new provider.
Transferring Existing Car Insurance
Even if you don’t have a new car, it’s sometimes a good idea to take a closer look at your auto insurance. By transferring your current auto insurance policy, you can sometimes save a significant amount. Switching to another insurer doesn’t have to be complicated at all. If you want to switch your car insurance, keep in mind that there’s often a notice period. For most insurers, this is one month. Additionally, you can’t simply switch if your car insurance policy has less than one year remaining. Therefore, always check your current policy terms and conditions first before deciding to switch your car insurance.
How can I report changes?
Would you like to keep your current insurance policy for your new car? Please contact us by phone or chat. We’ll work with you to determine whether it makes sense to stay with your current insurer or perhaps switch to a different one. You can submit the change as soon as you have the new car’s license plate number. The insurance can take effect the same day or on a date in the near future.
