On vacation with a roof box: is it insured?
Many people take the car out this summer to enjoy the sun in countries such as Germany, Italy and France. Sometimes not all the luggage fits in the car and a roof box is needed to carry the extra stuff. But how is your roof box actually insured?
Theft
It could happen that your roof box gets broken open while traveling or the entire roof box gets stolen from your car. If you have travel insurance, the stolen items will be reimbursed under the luggage coverage of your travel insurance, provided the roof box was securely attached to the luggage carriers and it was properly locked.
However, many companies do exclude coverage for theft when luggage is left unattended in the roof box overnight, for example. So even when traveling through a hotel, it is important to remove the (valuables) from the roof box. The conditions and coverages can differ from one company to another. It is therefore important to always read policy conditions carefully.
Damage to roof box
Besides theft of the belongings, your roof box can also be damaged, for example in an accident. Your roof box is not covered by your car insurance by default. Some insurances do cover accessories up to a certain amount. If this is not the case, you can include your roof box as an additional "accessory".
Tips
To prevent theft or damage to your roof box, it is wise to always lock your roof box and fasten it securely to the roof racks. Furthermore, it is wise not to put heavy items in the roof box; this is safer and the center of gravity of the car is lower which is nicer to drive. It is also advisable not to lose sight of the car with a full roof box and not to put valuables in the roof box. Of course, here too, the following applies: nothing in, nothing out.
