Frequently asked questions scooter insurance
What coverage can I choose with scooter insurance?
For your scooter, you can choose from three coverages, depending on the value of your scooter and how much risk you want to cover.
- Third Party Liability (WA).
This is the minimum required insurance for scooters and mopeds. This coverage only pays for damage you cause to others. - Third-party liability + Theft and Fire (Limited Warranty)
Besides liability, you are also insured for fire, theft, storm damage or attempted theft. Damage to your own scooter due to a collision is not yet covered. - Third-party liability + Theft, Fire and Collision (All-risk).
The most extensive coverage. With this you are insured for all of the above damages, plus damage to your own scooter, even if you caused it yourself.
Is scooter insurance mandatory in the Netherlands?
Yes, third-party insurance is required by law in the Netherlands for every scooter. Without insurance you are not allowed on the road. This also applies to scooters that you are temporarily not using, unless you suspend the license plate at the RDW.
What is the difference between WA, WA+ and All-risk for scooters?
WA only covers damage you cause to others. WA+ offers additional coverage for theft, fire and natural disasters. All-risk also covers damage to your own scooter, such as a fall or collision in which you are at fault.
Can I accrue claim-free years with scooter insurance?
Some insurers allow you to build up claim-free years with scooter insurance. Each year you drive without a claim counts as one claim-free year and can provide a lower premium. The more claim-free years you have, the greater the discount on your insurance.
Note: not all insurers register scooter years in Roy-data. Check this in advance so that you know whether you can take your accrued years with you when you switch to another insurer.
Is scooter insurance more expensive for young people?
Yes, young people under 24 usually pay a higher premium. Insurers consider young drivers a high-risk group because of more accidents and claims. The premium often drops as you get older and drive claim-free.
