All about mobility scooter insurance

With a mobility scooter comes cheap mobility scooter insurance. You can calculate this insurance online and purchase it directly online.

In addition to the mobility scooter, there are other disabled vehicles such as the Canta, Mini Cruiser City, Amica, or Arola. Driving these vehicles is subject to the same traffic regulations as a mobility scooter.

What is a mobility scooter?

A mobility scooter is a scooter, with at least three wheels, that is equipped to transport disabled people. A mobility scooter usually does not go faster than 15 km/h. The range, depending on make and type, is usually between 30 and 60 km.

A mobility scooter can be open or have an enclosed body.

Is insurance required for a mobility scooter?

A mobility scooter does not have a license plate like a moped or car but is still covered by the Motor Vehicle Liability Act (WAM).

If you have a mobility scooter in your name, you also have an insurance obligation. The moment the mobility scooter enters public roads, it must be insured. But the obligation is broader. Even if you use the motor vehicle off public roads, the insurance obligation exists.

If you don't insure your mobility scooter, you could be fined for driving around uninsured. A collision with an uninsured mobility scooter creates a bigger problem. This is because the damage caused cannot be recovered from an insurer. It is therefore mandatory to insure a mobility scooter.

Why do I need to insure my mobility scooter?

Before you can drive a mobility scooter, you must arrange for insurance. There are rules that must be met when insuring.

If the mobility scooter goes faster than 10 kilometers per hour, you must be at least 16 years old. Does the vehicle go slower? Then there is no minimum age requirement. No driver's license is required to drive the vehicle.

Insurance for a mobility scooter runs from May to May. You also take out the insurance for that entire period. Therefore, the premium payment is also per year.

How can you insure a mobility scooter?

A mobility scooter does not have a license plate. That does not mean that there is no insurance requirement. After taking out insurance, the insurer will give you an insurance plate. You are obliged to mount this on the back of the mobility scooter. This shows that the vehicle is insured. You will receive a new insurance plate every year.

What form of insurance do I choose?

In addition to the mandatory WA mobility scooter insurance, you have a choice of two more comprehensive coverages:

  • WA
  • All-risk (WA casco)

Few insurers offer insurance for the mobility scooter. Third-party liability (TPL) insurance is mandatory. Especially for a new mobility scooter and for older vehicles with a high daily value, the WA insurance is too limited. For these motor vehicles you can also choose WA-casco(all-risk). The WA-casco(or all-risk) offers the most extensive coverage and reimburses almost all damages.

Third-party insurance

Opting for third-party insurance means that you will not be paid for your own damage to the vehicle. Is your claim recoverable from the party that caused the damage? In that case, you can hold the other party liable, but your insurer will not do that for you.

All-risk (WA casco)

With a WA-casco( all-risk) coverage you are also insured for theft, collision (also by own fault), damage, joyriding or vandalism. In case of damage caused by an accident, for example, the insurer will reimburse the repair costs. Even if the damage is caused by the other party.

The insurer will then start recovering the damage from the other party. If your mobility scooter is too badly damaged you will be paid an amount. This amount depends on the daily value of the mobility scooter.

When do you take out insurance?

Before using a mobility scooter, you are required to mount the insurance plate on the mobility scooter. This is provided by the insurer after taking out mobility scooter insurance. Only then is the vehicle insured. In an accident without insurance, not only are you at fault, you must be able to pay for the damage yourself.

When am I insured?

Unlike most other insurance policies, you take out mobility scooter insurance until May 1 of each year. Mobility scooter insurance always runs from May 1 to May 1 the following year. If you don't take out insurance on May 1, then the premium will be pro-rated. That means this is a premium from the effective date of the insurance until May 1.

When you take out insurance online, you do not yet have immediate coverage. You are not yet allowed to drive the vehicle. After acceptance by the insurance company, you will receive the insurance sticker by mail. Once you have received it and stuck it on the vehicle, you can drive it on public roads.

Are there additional insurances available?

If you opt for third-party insurance, the next step is to expand the mobility scooter insurance policy to include recourse legal expenses.

With this coverage, in the event of an accident, the damages and additional costs of the damages resulting from the accident are recovered from the other party if they are liable.

Do you opt for the WA + casco? In that case, you will first be asked for the value of your mobility scooter.

What is required to purchase mobility scooter insurance?

To apply for mobility scooter insurance, we obviously need data about you. We also need further details about the mobility scooter to be insured. These are the make and type and the frame number. And of course we still want to know from which bank account number we can collect the premium.

Finally, a number of underwriting questions are asked. Insurers want to filter out insureds who have previously been refused by an insurer because of a criminal record, for example. They also ask about claims in the past three years.

Can I also insure my mobility scooter in September?

Insurance for a mobility scooter runs from May to May. You also purchase the insurance for that entire period. Purchasing insurance for your mobility scooter can be done at any time.

Suppose you take out mobility scooter insurance in September, it expires at the end of April. On May 1, your mobility scooter must be reinsured. You will receive a proposal from the insurer for this.

How is your mobility scooter insurance premium calculated?

Mobility scooter insurance is a relatively simple policy. Factors such as the number of claim-free years, the weight of the mobility scooter and how often the vehicle is used are not important in determining the premium.

Insurers do look at whether it is a covered or an open mobility scooter. Of course, they also look at the form of insurance you choose. Comprehensive all-risk insurance is obviously more expensive than third-party insurance. In addition, the age of the driver may also play a role.

Can I compare insurance for a mobility scooter?

Compared to most other motor vehicles, there are relatively few insurers offering insurance for the mobility scooter. Mobility scooter insurance is a relatively easy insurance to compare. Moreover, it is a relatively inexpensive insurance policy. Still, it is important to compare on price, but also on terms and conditions. That way, you choose a mobility scooter insurance policy that is appropriate for your situation.

How old do you have to be for a mobility scooter?

Both young and old people may drive a mobility scooter. If the mobility scooter goes faster than 10 kilometers per hour, you must be at least 16 years old. Does the vehicle go slower? Then there is no minimum age requirement.

No driver's license is required to drive the vehicle.

The speed of a mobility scooter ranges from 6 to 45 kilometers per hour.

How fast you can drive a mobility scooter depends on where you are driving. The following traffic rules apply to driving a mobility scooter:

  • On the sidewalk: a maximum of 6 km/hour

  • Bicycle path outside built-up area 40 km/hour

Can I insure a mobility scooter against theft?

Insuring a mobility scooter against theft is a wise choice. Theft is, after all, a risk not to be underestimated. After all, the chances of ever finding the mobility scooter again are very small.

A mobility scooter is an unregistered vehicle. This has the disadvantage that a stolen vehicle is easier to resell compared to a car. With mobility scooter insurance with All-risk coverage, you are insured against this.

Not only the stealing itself is insured, but also the damage caused by theft or attempted theft is insured. Even with good locks, you can still not be sure that your mobility scooter is safe everywhere.

Mobility scooter not insured with only third-party coverage

Third-party liability (WA) insurance is mandatory. Choosing WA mobility scooter insurance means that in the event of an accident, only the other party's damages will be paid for by your insurer.

Frequently asked questions about mobility scooter insurance

After applying for mobility scooter insurance, may I drive immediately?

By law, you are required to have at least third-party insurance for your mobility scooter. However, you may not immediately hit the road with the mobility scooter after applying for the insurance.

This is because you need to attach an insurance plate or sticker to the vehicle. You get this insurance plate or sticker from the insurer, once they have accepted the application and made out the policy.

As soon as you use the mobility scooter, it must be insured. Even if you do not use the vehicle on public roads. Whether or not the mobility scooter is insured is shown by the insurance plate on the back of the vehicle.

If it is not mounted during an accident, the insurer will not provide coverage. In fact, the insurance plate is a requirement for being insured.

Are other people allowed to ride my mobility scooter?

When applying for insurance, you specify the driver. If someone else was driving in the event of a claim, this may affect claims payments. The insurer will assess this on a case-by-case basis.

If you sell the mobility scooter to someone, they may not ride with your insurance plate. This person must apply for new insurance for the mobility scooter themselves.
