Police report

If the police have drawn up a police report following a collision, they will send it to the Dutch Association of Motor Insurers after some time. Only one month after the damage has taken place, those involved may request to receive a copy of the registration form.

You will usually receive this copy two weeks after the request has been sent. Unfortunately, sometimes it can also take months. For example, it can happen that the report was not forwarded by the relevant agents, but that they only made an internal note. This can greatly delay the settlement of your claim, but unfortunately there is little or nothing you can do about it.

In some cases, the registration form is not enough and the insurance company will want to see the full report. This can delay the settlement for months, as this request goes through a special route. The content of the registration form has no probative value and only serves to provide a more comprehensive insight into the circumstances of the damage.

Witnesses

Witnesses often play a greater role in the settlement of a claim than the police making the damage report. This is because the contents of the registration form have no probative value. Therefore, in order to prove the liability of the other party, it is important that you have other means of proof. Witnesses are an excellent tool here, as they - unlike the police - saw what happened.

Tip: first watch out for any witnesses and note down the license plates or details of these witnesses before you go to check on the damage to your car. The damage remains on your car, but the witnesses go away. As you have read above, you can really need the witnesses.

Even if the other party admits at the time that the damage is his or her fault, the next day they may claim otherwise. If you do not have any witnesses, you will not be able to prove your reading. As a result, the settlement of the claim may be severely delayed or you may receive no or only partial compensation. So watch out for your interests!

Expert

Alpina engages an expert through the insurance company of the other party. This expert's job is to determine the damage to your car.

Often, the surveyor will indicate a certain amount that you should receive in your account within two weeks. However, in many cases this is not correct! Firstly, they cannot judge this and secondly, it depends on many other factors.

After an expert has determined the extent of the damage, you can, in principle, have the car repaired. But beware! You do this at your own risk, because at that moment it is not certain whether the other party will actually pay compensation.

Claim form

You have received a claim form with the provisional confirmation of cover. Always keep this in your car. The form consists of an original and a self-printing copy. Fill in the front of the claim form at the scene of the accident together with the other party.

Pay attention to what you fill in! When you sign the form, it is often binding for the question of guilt. So fill it in carefully and mention in the commentary if you disagree with something (e.g. what the other party says). You cannot change this later. It does not matter whether your details are filled in on the left or the right. After everyone has received a copy, fill in the back in its entirety at home.

Tip: Pay attention to the situation drawing on the claim form. Make sure it reflects the correct facts.

By acting as carefully as possible in the event of damage, you can avoid a lot of misery!
By the way, it is absolutely not necessary to report damage to us within 24 hours. It is early enough if you report weekend damage on Monday.

Counterparty

In many cases it goes well. Your counterparty has also neatly filled in the claim form and sent it to its agent or insurer. In that case your claim can be settled within the normal time frame. Of course, this still depends on being able to quickly establish the liability of the other party.

Unfortunately, it often happens that the other party, out of ignorance or for other reasons, has not or not completely filled in the claim form and sent it to their agent or insurer. In that case the settlement can be delayed by weeks or even months. We therefore advise you to tell the other party that they should also fill in the form at the back and send it to their own intermediary or insurer.

Legal expenses insurance

It is best to take out traffic law insurance. Especially for damages that occur abroad and for serious injuries, you can hardly do without legal assistance. A legal expenses insurance provides for legal assistance and the use of experts who are known locally.

An opposing party is more inclined to pay if it has to deal with a legal expenses insurer or its lawyer. For only 63 Euros per year, you can get complete family traffic legal assistance! All matters in traffic are covered.
